My story

[p]I’ve entered an event that will push me beyond anything I’ve ever done before and I’m doing this for Liberty. Liberty was a young, vibrant, sporty, county swimmer who loved to dance and her precious life was so cruelly cut short by Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Liberty would have partook in ultra events, and most probably winning! This is for you Liberty, keeping your legacy alive ❤[/p][p]Liberty’s Story[/p][p]For those of you that don't know, Liberty Grace Schurer lived in Chalfont St Peter all her life but very sadly gained her wings in October 2017, after fighting a courageous battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of primary Bone Cancer. She had just celebrated her 14th birthday 2 weeks before.[/p][p]Throughout her treatment Liberty shone brightly as an inspiration to so many with how bravely and valiantly she faced everything thrown at her, from gruelling chemotherapy and hair loss to limb salvage surgeries, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant. She refused to let this cruel disease define her and the dazzling smile for which she was so well known and wicked sense of humour rarely faded, despite everything she had to endure.[/p][p]When she discovered the shocking news that despite everything she had been through her cancer had not only returned but spread and there was nothing further that could be done, her greatest wish was for no other young person or family to suffer in the same way. She also did not want to be forgotten, remarkably being the only fear she ever expressed. And so within days of her gaining her wings on October 11th 2017, her idea for Liberty's Legacy was born in line with her wishes.[/p][p]Liberty's Legacy is a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for life saving research. All monies raised are ringfenced specifically for research into Ewing's and the funds her family have raised to date, totalling over £325,000, have already had a direct impact, helping to fund three Research Projects so far in 2018/19 with a further grant to be awarded later this year.[/p][p]Survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in nearly 40 years and the treatment protocol that Liberty received was not only designed for adults, but was decades old. Currently just 1 in 5 diagnosed with the most aggressive form of this disease survive and this urgently need to change, so that children like Liberty in the future diagnosed with this insidious disease have a fighting chance. [/p][p]Thank you for reading and thank you for donating. [/p]
