Team story

This year's Karl Baddeley Memorial Beer Mile is being run to raise money for Tiny Lives. That's a charity that supports premature and sick newborn babies and their families on the Neonatal Unit at the RVI hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. Its a charity that means a lot to our former club captains Tim Nicholson and Kayleigh Dunn, so please give generously![p]The participating athletes are: Matt Thomas, David Nelson, Simon Fitzmaurice, David Glencross, John Armstrong, Ben Barker, Sam Blackburn, Anthony Williams, Paul-Emmanuel Guinard, Russ Hall and Myles Preston (San Pellegrino Mile).[/p][lt]h2[gt]About The Karl Baddeley Memorial Beer Mile[lt]/h2[gt]As many of you will already know, Karl was a longstanding member of the club. He first joined back in 2015 and stayed with us right through until 2016. Karl was many things to many people: a runner, a social secretary, a lover. But in all these roles, there was one constant: Karl's performances never failed to disappoint. [p]Nothing lasts forever. In early 2016 Karl tragically lost his looks in a drinking accident and was forced to leave the club. But although he may no longer be with us, his memory lives on.[/p] [p]This one is for Karl.[/p] [lt]h2[gt]FAQ[lt]/h2[gt] [p]1. Who can take part? Members only. Entry now closed.[/p] [p]2. What is a beer mile? The official rules can be found on the governing body website. Briefly: you run 4 times 400m drinking a can of beer at the start of each lap. The beer must be 5% and at least 355 ml. There is a 10m transition zone in which to drink beer. The start is at the first meter of the transition zone to ensure a full mile is run. If you vomit you must run a penalty lap.[/p] [p]3. Can I drink something other than beer? Only beer can be drunk for club (or world) record attempts. However, athletes who wish to consume cider, san pellegrino or similar beverages may participate informally. Effervesence is essential.[/p] [p]4. Where will this take place? We will meet at Talacre at 7:15, but the event will not take place at Talacre. We're going to the Princess of Wales in Primrose Hill afterwards.[/p] [p]5. Will it be well lit? No. You should wear a headtorch.[/p] [p]6. Will we go to the pub afterwards? Yes. The Princess of Wales in Primrose Hill.[/p] [p]7. Will beer be provided? You may request that we supply beer for you when you sign up. You will be expected to pay cost price for the beer on the night and will have no choice as to brand.[/p] [p]8. Why would anyone do this? Last year's event was greatly enjoyed by all participants, much to their suprise.[/p] [p]9. Is it safe and sensible to run in the dark while drinking beer? No. We recommend you do not do this race. If you choose to participate you are an idiot and it is entirely at your own risk.[/p] [p]10. Who was Karl Baddeley? I have no idea.[/p]
