My story

[p]You might be wondering why I am running another marathon. I ummed & ahhed about whether to do it again - whether to bug you all with fundraising, whether to train again. [/p][p]My sister Serena has profound disabilities, but as we grew up, she’s always just been my sister. She’s special. You could miss it if you don’t pay close attention, & dismiss her because she can’t do things like walk and talk, but this only makes me love her more, and even if she can’t tell me, I am pretty sure she feels the same. Serena has always been my motivator to raise money & run. To stomp the pavements remembering the struggles she endures. To raise money to make the world a fairer place for people like her. [/p][p]Enter – Mencap. My knowledge of Mencap was limited until 2019, when I started working here. Now I tell people about them all the time (even Uber drivers!). I tell them less about Mencap, and more about the people with a learning disability who Mencap exists for & because of. [/p][p]Mencap cherishes & empowers people with a learning disability every day, & through this, amazing things happen. I feel warmed & honoured to have met and worked alongside my colleagues with a learning disability here, as well as learn about the many areas that Mencap campaign on and support. I have no hesitation in telling anyone that Mencap is a great charity to support, just look at their Twitter & you can hear it better said directly from someone with a learning disability.[/p][p]Mencap share with me the desire to look at disability positively. To see the person first, to value & empower them. Their work is important. A world where Serena is respected & valued is important. It’s not something to umm & ahh about. It’s something I’m passionate about, & willing to train & run 26 miles again in aid of. So please join me in helping more people with a learning disability shine and be seen. [/p][p]Laila x[/p]
