My story

[p]Hello, my name is Chewy and I will be running the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 28th April 2019.[/p][p]There are a few reasons why I’m running the marathon this year.[/p][p]The 1st is because two members of my family have run it before and this has inspired me to do the same. My Uncle Chris Wright and Sister Zoe King have both run the marathon in the last 3 years with my uncle running in 2016 and 2018 and my sister running in 2017. My Uncle ran his first for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF), after having served a full career in the Army. Both my Uncle and Sister ran for Cancer Research UK in memory of my Cousin Demi Wright who sadly lost her life to a rare form of cancer, Adenocarcinoma, at the age of 22. As family and friends we have raised over £20,000 for Cancer Research UK in memory of Demi. [/p][p]The 2nd is because I want to challenge myself. This all really started when I completed my first Tough Mudder back in 2014 with a couple of friends. This increased when I heard that some of my wife’s work colleagues also ran the event so I decided to join them. To date, I have completed 6 events with 2 planned this year already. I feel running a marathon is on another level and a great achievement, and there is no better location to do it than London. To support this I have entered the ballot since 2017 and have been unsuccessful each year including this one. This leads on to my 3rd reason.[/p][p]The 3rd is that my Wife, Laura Smillie-Henson, is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) training to become a Paramedic. Over the years, I have met some amazing people that work in the ambulance service and I constantly see and hear all the incredible things they do for other people. They work tirelessly, long hours, often in difficult situations and never knowing what will come next. Through my wife I was told about a group of service personnel that had set up a ‘Marathon Medics’ group to run the VMLM 2019. I felt this was my opportunity to get involved and show my support to all members of the EEAST by completing this year’s marathon alongside them.[/p][p]Why SADS UK?[/p][p]Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS), also known as Sudden Adult Death Syndrome is when someone dies suddenly following a cardiac arrest and no obvious cause can be found. The most important factor in the event of cardiac arrest is the time from it happening to CPR commencing. The survival rate can be as high as 90% if treatment is initiated within the first minutes after sudden cardiac arrest. By calling for an Ambulance, a cardiac arrest is classified as the highest priority call meaning the nearest emergency ambulance available will be dispatched immediately to your need. Considering time is a crucial factor, SADS UK have been enabling more Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADs) to be put in the community to help save lives. [/p][p]SADS affects around 500 people in the UK every year. [/p][p]All donations received will go a long way to helping SADS UK continue their amazing work. I cannot thank you enough for your support and kind donations. [/p]
