My story

[p]Hi, I’m Liam and I’ll be running the 2020 London Marathon for Shelter![/p][p] [/p][p]I had some personal experience with homelessness when I was younger, and this led me to volunteering with SHP (Single Homeless Project) also getting involved with BEAM and to my current role at Shelter. [/p][p] [/p][p]At SHP I worked with people every day who were sleeping on the streets, and who needed a safe space to eat and talk to people facing the same problems as them. Many of them wouldn’t get given the time of day by a lot of the people walking past them But having a drop-in centre run by peer-mentors meant we could engage and work with vulnerable people and help them get the support they needed.[/p][p] [/p][p]Working at SHP led me to Beam which is a charity set up to help people who have experienced homelessness gain a qualification which will lead them into full time work. working with my caseworker at beam helped me gain more confidence in myself when it came to looking for work which in turn led me to my current job as a GROW trainee at Shelter. The GROW trainee program at Shelter helps people with lived experience of homelessness to get on the job experience and use their skills to help other people who are struggling. I work a lot on helping people with their wellbeing and resilience. Working at Shelter has shown me the other side of the coin – how hard people are working on a day to day basis to help people, and how pressing the problem is. I see how real homelessness is on a much bigger scale now. [/p][p] [/p][p]For me, having the opportunity to work as a GROW trainee has had such a positive impact on my wellbeing – I never would have expected to be doing a marathon when I started at Shelter, but here I am doing the training and enjoying it! I’m really excited for the future. [/p][p] [/p][p]Please donate to help Shelter carry on the work they do – giving advice and support to people who need it and delivering programs like GROW which give people amazing opportunities they wouldn’t have had otherwise. Every donation helps – thank you. [/p][p] [/p][p]If you want to find out more about Shelter’s work you can go to their website: www.shelter.org.uk [/p][p] [/p][p]Thanks![/p]
