Team story

[p]Hi,[/p] [p]Welcome to our page.  This photo is of my beautiful family and I last November just before I was admitted to ICU in Warrington Hospital.  I suffered an acute case of Strep A pneumonia which resulted in multiple organ failure.  I very nearly lost my life. I am eternally grateful to the doctors and nurses who worked tirelessly on me over the 12 days that I was ventilated and am grateful for every day I am awake now.[/p] [p]What many people don't realise (certainly I didn't) is that the road to recovery after an illness like this can be a very difficult one.  I have been lucky to have such wonderful support around me, but there is a large misunderstanding about what happens when a person leaves ICU, the shock and after effects this can have on the whole family.  Many people are surprised at how slow my recovery is, and away from the ICU department there is a lack of understanding about the effects of being in ICU can have on the body long after you are discharged.[/p] [p]The outreach team at Warrington Hospital ICU do so much to support you when you first move to a ward and I would have gone stir crazy without their knowledge, help and support on the ward and am currently waiting on registration of Warrington Hospital to this page so that we can direct funds to their work.[/p][p]We have also chosen to raise important funds for ICUsteps, it is the only support group of it's kind in the UK and is entirely run by volunteers.  The online presence and the booklet gave me (and others) so much after coming around (lets face it, I slept through the rough bit!).[/p] [p]They provide support to both patients and relatives of those affected by critical illness.  They help to raise awareness of the how critical illness affects you in the body and the mind and help you to understand it is normal.  They help to bridge the information gap from ICU to other nursing staff and doctors that may not understand the effects of ICU on a patient.  They encourage important research into the treatment and prevention of these issues that can have such a dramatic and lasting effect on people's lives.[/p] [p]As you all know, I was never one for "exercise" and certainly could never attempt this before I was unwell.  So this is my very own mini marathon (even though it's technically 5K) to which I am working towards after 6 months post ventilation and multiple organ failure in ICU.  Obviously I am well on the mend.[/p][p]I am blessed by friends and family who are so supportive that some will even be joining me in the Colour Run for the day, it will be amazing to share the experience with them after all, Life is for Living!  Please give generously and help us to reach and exceed our goal.[/p] [p]Thank you for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organization and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]

Sorry my donation is a bit late but a worthy cause to support. ICU can touch us all and our family would have valued crucial support all the times mum was in ICU between 1997-2001.
