Team story

[p]Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.[/p][p]I have been given the slightly scary pleasure of being selected to join the mental health charity Mind in their challenge, Mind 3000s. This challenge involves 2 teams of 24, each lead by a Mind celebrity ambassador.  Team Wales will take on the challenge of trekking mountains higher than 3000 ft in Wales over 24 hours. I will be part of Team England, and we will be climbing 4 mountains in 24 hours - trekking four peaks in the Lake District over 3000ft - Skiddaw, Hellvelyn, Scafell and Scafell Pike.  I have never undertaken anything quite like this before and, although I am really excited, I am also a little nervous. I will really need your support![/p][p]I am primarily undertaking this challenge in memory of my dear big brother Ian, who died by suicide in 2011, after a long battle with depression.  He was 35 years old. Ian's struggle with his mental illness began significantly in his mid twenties and continued for 8 years until he died. We were very close and through those years I felt we faced his mental health issues together, tackling issues as they arose and muddling through as best we could from crisis to crisis.  His death has had an absolutely devastating affect on me, my sister and our parents, and during the years since he left, we have faced complexities and pain that I never pre-emptied.  I myself have developed depression and anxiety under the strain of trying to cope with what has happened, both during Ian's life and since his death.[/p][p]I am also undertaking this challenge as I feel that we must begin to tackle the stigma attached to mental illness which is, unbelievably, still so rife in our society. 1 in 4 people experience mental health difficulties in their lifetime, and suicide remains the most common cause of death in males under 35.  This is a serious epidemic, yet we still can't talk openly and honestly about mental illnesses.  I feel passionately that we must start approaching mental health problems with the gravity, concern and understanding as we approach physical health problems.  I myself have experienced stigma and lack of understanding, and I know many others who have too, including Ian.  I also see this stigma and trivialising of mental illness from a professional point of view in my job as a nurse.  Mental illness can have a catastrophic effect on all aspects of wellbeing and we must challenge ourselves and others to completely change the attitude towards it.  I have learnt first hand that, contrary to common belief, mental illness can be terminal. [/p][p]Mind are a fantastic charity who work hard to tackle stigma, raise awareness, signpost people who are struggling, lobby for change and many other areas. Thank you for supporting me in this challenge which means such a lot to me, and which will enable many more people suffering with mental health problems to be helped.[/p][p]Louise x[/p][p][i]Hi, thanks for visiting our page.
