My story

[p]Magnificent seven are up for their biggest endurance challenge[/p][p] The ‘Magnificent Seven’ are in training for the biggest endurance test of their lives – a 24-hour non-stop relay race over a blistering six-mile circuit in the grounds of Leicestershire’s Belvoir Castle.[/p][p]Seven members of Aspire’s running team have signed up to take part in Equinox 24, an ironman and woman challenge involving each team member running a six-mile lap then passing an electronic baton to the next colleague.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Aspire team has to collectively notch up 100 miles of continuous day and night running from 12 noon on Saturday 18 September to 12 noon Sunday 19 September, 2021. Some members may complete as many as six laps over rough, hilly terrain in the 24 hours, well beyond a marathon distance, with everyone snatching what sleep they can between turns.[/p][p]“This event is not for the faint hearted, it’s not a fun run, it’s a real extreme test of everyone’s mettle”, says team leader Jim Fletcher, an Aspire caseworker and seasoned runner, who is drawing up a tough training regime for the squad over the coming weeks.[/p][p] “Seven us will have to eat up 100 miles but I reckon, by peaking our training at the right time, we may even be able to clock up as many as 120 miles in 24 hours. Between now and then we’ll be running regular six milers, including training at night through the woods at Doncaster’s Sandall Beat wearing head torches to see our way”, added Jim.[/p][p]Running with Jim at Equinox 24 are two male and four female colleagues from Aspire’s New Beginnings, Roslyn House and Sinclair House workplaces in Doncaster – Daniel Bowden, Louise Henry, Laura Hill, Kay Huntington, Paul Wade and Maggie Walley. Jim, at 65, is the veteran of the pack with Maggie, the youngest, aged 27.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Said Jim: “There will be up to 200 teams from across the country taking part and we are really up for it. I’m amazed at how excited everyone is about taking part.[/p][p]We are raising funds for [/p][p] [/p][p]“Some of our training sessions will involve running three six milers in a day across open country, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, followed by one in the dark. It requires dedication and commitment to reach the required level of fitness and we’ll get there. We’re already planning to run the Edale Ring of Fire, in Derbyshire, a course that is exactly what it says on the tin – 15 miles of rough ground rising 4,500 along the route. [/p][p] [/p][p]“When we have completed Equinox 24, we can really call ourselves ultra-runners. Bring it on!”[/p][p]We are raising valuable funds for the charity we work for "The Alcohol & Drug Service" and specifically for the Recovery Games fund. The Recovery Games is an annual event that celebrates individuals recovery from substance use. The money will be used for our next event.[/p]
