My story

[p]I am cycling 100 miles to help raise awareness for the charity British Tinnitus. I have volunteered over the past few years to assist in ways to manage coping mechanisms for tinnitus in everyday life and to improve sleep patterns. My personal experience with tinnitus has seen me withdraw from my social life, as I struggle to hear in busy environments. My tinnitus was the symptom of having pneumonia and pleurisy 12 years ago. A working life in construction has lead to hyperacausis, an intolerance of certain everyday sounds that causes significant distress and impairment in social, occupational, recreational, and other day-to-day activities. Some sounds I perceive are uncomfortably loud, unpleasant, frightening, or painful. I experience dizziness and nausea from time to time as the vagus nerve is disturbed, causing disruption to emotion regulation, social connection and fear response. I have found cognitive behavioural therapy support groups a great source of relief and empowerment.[/p]
