My story

[p]96 of us are hiking up Ben Nevis in memory of football supporters, who travelled to watch their team and didn't come home. We are raising money for mental health charities (including those specifically aimed at the young) on their behalf.[/p][p]It is invariably a long and winding road for individuals suffering with mental health issues. Some much more difficult to walk than others, with the saddest part often being the fact that people are more concerned with hiding their condition than asking for help.[/p][p]The catalyst for our walk has been the memory of the 96 people who lost their lives at Hillsborough, an event that affected an unquantifiable number of people in so many different ways. There is an inextricable link between the tragedy and the short and long term mental health of those fans who attended the game, as well as that of their family, friends and communities, who watched from afar. This makes the combination of the walk and the goal of raising mental health awareness, allied to the financial support achieved, feel so right.[/p][p]The event was initiated by Mark Doyle, a Kirkby lad for his sins, who now enjoys the privilege of traipsing around the Trossachs as his day job. His dream was to take 96 people up Ben Nevis, subsequently wanting to do it to raise awareness of mental health and provide financial support for the organisations who struggle to combat it.[/p][p]So Blues and Reds alike have taken up the challenge, along with the lads and lasses from God's own country, the Merry Mob from Manchester et al. The lads volunteering to take up the bagpipes will give it an even more authentic and most welcome Scottish feel. They will serenade us as we struggle up the big hill(?), especially those of us who are supposedly already over it!![/p][p]We sincerely hope that our long and winding walk, with this large group of like-minded friends and friends to be, will go a long way to both raising the profile of mental health issues, whilst also helping to financially support some of the organisations that do an awful lot of fantastic and often unheralded work within our communities.[/p][p]The need has never been greater on the back of this pandemic, which has blighted so many lives. The fact that the number of children on the waiting list for consultation/counselling has risen 128% in the last twelve months, is just one of the many worrying causes for concern. Wearing the snowdrop on the shirts in memory of all those who lost their lives to Covid 19, will be a poignant reminder of the devastation it has caused, as we trek up the mountain.[/p][p]Your help would be massively appreciated. Thank you x[/p]
