My story

[p]MumBA1 Hair Project – A Bath business making the difference in Mumbai[/p][p][br][/p][p]The Bath based hair salon, BA1 Hair, has long been a hair salon with a social conscience. This has been demonstrated both through its strong association with the Aveda brand, which emphasises sustainability and through the work of Phil Thompson and Zac Fennell in cutting hair for the homeless on Bath’s streets.[/p][p]Phil and Zac have now taken the desire to give something back to the community to a new level. They have teamed up with the Indian operations of the UK charity, Oasis. They have jointly developed a project to provide life skills to trafficked women in the red-light district of Mumbai. These women are typically trafficked as young girls from the poor rural areas of India and are forced into prostitution in the thriving city. By their late teens they are on the junk heap, free to move on but, because of a lack of education and skills, they have no future.[/p][p]In early June Zac and Phil organised a fund-raising dinner to support the project at The Mint Room restaurant in Bath. The restaurant donated not only the venue for the event, but also all the food for the evening. Around 100 guests enjoyed curry and Indian singing interspersed with some hard-hitting facts delivered by Jessica Gunjal of Oasis India. According to Jessica “Girls often are sold into prostitution from the age of eight. They will have up to thirty clients per day with four of them sharing a room. By the time they get to eighteen their hope is gone, and their spirit is crushed. They do not even know the days of the week; every day is the same”.[/p][p]Zac went on to comment on the project objectives “The greatest thing you can ever give anybody is a future. Oasis has for many years been providing the girls counselling and support. Our project is aimed at building on this good work and giving these girls a life skill, which can provide that future for them. We have designed a modular hair styling and cutting course, which over a period of six to nine months gives them a qualification of real value. We have built a small training salon in the Mumbai red-light district, which allows the girls to train in a real environment and towards the end of their training, to invite members of the public to have their haircut by the trainees”.[/p][p]Zac continued “Often the girls start slowly but after a few days all that changes. They become enthusiastic, motivated and where there was cynicism we see humour and spirit emerge. The transformation is amazing and is very humbling to see”.[/p][p]The second batch of training is now under-way and fifteen girls are enrolled and working with the Oasis staff are starting to re-build their hope and to give themselves the sort of future which we, in the Western World, take for granted.[/p]
