Team story

[p]We are an enthusiastic group from Norfolk (not known for its hills!), keen to raise money for our chosen charity, The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Ella (our niece/great niece) has CF, and doing really well, and that's partly due to the support of the CF Trust which does fantastic work in supporting people with CF. We plan to walk (or crawl if necessary) the 3 National Peaks within 24 hours in June 2021! [/p][p]This is Ella’s story by her mum, Leyna:[/p][p]“I don't normally share things about Ella's CF and I feel (all things considered) she has been SO lucky with her CF journey. [/p][p]But as it’s Cystic Fibrosis awareness month......[/p][p]When your baby is born and you're handed this little bundle of perfectness you vow to do anything and everything in your power to keep them safe. So at 5 weeks old when I was given the news that Ella had cystic fibrosis my whole world felt like it came crashing down. At that time the average life expectancy of someone with CF was 40. How are you ever supposed to accept that your child may die before you? [/p][p]It didn't start off all that great when Psydomonus (a commonly found bacteria which can be really tricky to eradicate from a cfers airway) reared its ugly head at just 8 months old, leading to Ella’s first hospital admission. But after 2 weeks, lots of tears (from us all) and a new found needle and hospital phobia for Ella, she beat it and we were able to go home! Next up came her having to see a therapist at 1 years old because she would have panic attacks everytime we got to the barriers of the hospital, not good when you have to visit hospital monthly! Fast forward 5years and she once again ended up in hospital with her lung function dropping to just above 40% (the same as a 90 year old!). Through sheer determination Ella’s CF consultant fought SO hard to get Ella a new drug, Kalydeco, that (at that time) wasn't available to someone of Ella’s age in the UK. She was 1 of only 2 children in Europe who had Kalydeco. Now thankfully it’s widely available to a number of CF patients with Ella’s mutation (I always feel like Ella should be at Xaviers school for gifted youngsters when I talk about her mutation). [/p][p]Since being on Kalydeco she has only had 1 hospital admission and has gone from needing over 12 tablets daily and 3 nebulisers, to just 4 tablets and 1 nebuliser. [/p][p]I can only pray that Kalydeco continues to work for Ella, or even better medications are discovered (or a cure 🤞) [/p][p]My Auntie, Uncle and Brother are doing the 3 peaks challenge (walking Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and snowdon all within 24hours) to raise money for the CF Trust. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.”[/p][p]The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity making a daily difference to the lives of people with cystic fibrosis and those who care for them.[/p][p]Our group is Luke Pavey, Tim Cave and Julie Cave and we have brilliant support from Stephen and Lynne Pavey. Please give anything you can for this fantastic charity & support our quest![/p]
