My story

[p]Hello, thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I’m Richard and for more than 17 years I have worked on projects to help improve the lives of the people of Afghanistan. I lived in Kabul for seven years, sharing a house and office with Afghan colleagues. Everything I have done so far has been in a professional capacity, supporting ongoing humanitarian and development work to help build peace and prosperity for all Afghans. Now I want to support the people of Afghanistan in a personal way.[/p][p]Since 2002, I have seen for myself that Afghanistan remains in desperate need of help. With 40 years of near constant war and violence, most Afghans know nothing other than conflict and struggle. You can imagine just how utterly miserable the lives of remote, rural Afghan families continue to be when trying to survive in the face of conflict, predation, drought, floods and disease. I am in awe of their dignity, resilience and strength. These people deserve better and I am now doing something to help them in my own way.[/p][p]I am lucky enough to be running the London Marathon in April 2020 on behalf of the amazing charity Afghanaid, a humanitarian and development charity dedicated to the vision of a peaceful and thriving Afghanistan. Their work gives ordinary Afghans a voice in their own development and shaping the future of their country. Afghanaid builds basic services, improves livelihoods, strengthens the rights of women and children, helps communities protect against natural disasters, and responds to humanitarian emergencies. [/p][p]100% of the money I raise will go to Afghanaid directly supporting their projects on the ground in Afghanistan. [/p][p]£5 Could provide a class of women with literacy lessons, enabling them to live with dignity and independence.[/p][p]£10 Could provide schools with proper toilets and access to clean water, encouraging attendance and reducing illness.[/p][p]£20 Could buy 20 apple trees for a family, giving them a new source of income and nutrition.[/p][p]Thank you for reading this far and if you are kind enough to sponsor me, please look out for a “running Thank You” note I intend to run using GPS Art* for every donation I receive. I’m taking the thank you note to another level! THANK YOU.[/p][p]*GPS Art is a method of writing and drawing using a Global Positioning System (GPS) device (like the GPS device within a mobile phone) to create a large-scale picture or text on satellite imagery or a map.[/p]
