My story

[p]I DID IT![/p][p]it took me over 6 hours & was the hardest thing I've ever done. The heat, the altitude, THE STAIRS! It was so difficult but I gave it everything & didn't give up. [/p][p]It was only equalled by the beauty of the sites & the amazing experience. I loved every minute despite the pain.[/p][p][/p][p]Hi, thanks for visiting my page. [/p][p]I will be taking on The Great Wall Marathon in China on 21st May 2016 to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK. In order to complete what is rated the Worlds third hardest marathon, I'll be covering 26.2 miles, but this event also means climbing 5,164 steps! This will be my toughest running challenge to date! [/p][p]Why ARUK?[/p][p]When I first started this page I wrote 'My grandmother has been diagnosed with dementia and I am seeing first hand the impact on her and loved ones around her', that was true until she sadly passed away on 2nd December '15. I'm thankful to the specialist dementia nurses that cared for her.[/p][p]Dementia is not a disease in itself. Dementia is a word used to describe a group of symptoms that occur when brain cells stop working properly. Alzheimer’s Research UK firmly believes in the power of research to create a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia, which makes them the perfect charity for me to support for 2016, it's a cause close to home and close to my heart. [/p][p]Why the Great Wall Marathon?[/p][p]I saw this event a few years ago and really wanted to do it, as a runner why wouldn't I want to take on this really tough but awesome challenge to test myself and see some fabulous sites to boot. The costs involved in flying to China, entry, accommodation etc. were too high to make it a viable charity project, too high for me to cover personally and I'd written off as a pipe dream. However I have been very fortunate and lucky to have won the Squeeze the Day competition where you could win your own bespoke bucket list challenge. I of course chose the Great Wall Marathon and the cost of my flights, race entry, accomodation and full marathon kit are being covered by Capri-Sun. (See http://tinyurl.com/hq4az7j  ) This is fantastic because this means 100% of your donations will go to ARUK, without any deductions for my participation in the event.[/p][p]Please dig deep and donate what you can.[/p][p]UPDATE!!! 06/01/2016 Thanks to Casey Neistat in NY USA hosting a YouTube givaway, I have won also now won a DJI Phantom 3 Drone Camera. (see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks3dopMp-eA ) I can use this camera to film this experience and share it all with you online. Please subscribe to my YouTube Channel here https://www.youtube.com/user/baze187 where you can get some amazing aerial imagery of this whole adventure after the race. [/p][p]In addition I'd like to say thanks to On The Run http://www.ontherun.me.uk/ who will be lending me their GoPro to get some ground footage too.[/p][p]For those that have followed my running journey previously you will know that I have completed a mararthon before, but these have always been flat, road marathons close to sea level. This challenge is taking things to the next level, with the shear amount of steps to climb, being over 4,000 feet above sea level, in the hot Chinese climate, it will be my toughest challenge to date. The only way to go tougher in a marathon is to go to the Antarctic or the desert. In the London Marathon for example a large amount of people running are on a Gold Bond Place where the first few hundred pounds of donations purely covers their entry before the charity benefits. Although this is an essential "business model" for charities to continue to benefit year on year, it does detract a lot of funds from the charity that could have been spent well on research. In this challenge ARUK do not need to pay for my costs, you know your money is going to them to spend on what they need.[/p][p]Thank you for reading this page and if you can, please make a donation. Your support will mean the world to me and I know ARUK will be hugely greatful for the donation.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]

You are totally crazy (I've said that to you before) and I'm in awe. Brought back good memories of Great Wall. My grandmother has had dementia for nearly 10 years, it's too late for her but hopefully not for someone else. Thank you and well done.
