My story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting my page. [/p][p]In 2005 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and endured treatment and surgery to survive this relentless disease. She never complained and was a rock throughout these difficult and frightening times. I soon realised that there was nothing I could have done to save her and if it were not for the medical care available I could have lost her.  I wanted to give something back so in 2009 I ran the Great North Run in 01:55:37 raising £1318 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.[/p][p]I was so happy with this result & glad I’d raised some money to help. Now I’m very glad I did as another close relative has recently had the disease and once again the excellent treatment available has saved her life.[/p][p]This recent scare has once again brought it home to me that others are not so lucky, the money I raised 3 years ago has long been spent and if people are to continue to survive the research needs to continue.[/p][p]This has inspired me to run my socks off once again and luckily Breakthrough have taken me back onto their running team for the Great North Run 2012 but considering I've dont it before I thought people may not see it as a challenge for me, so to spice this up a bit I will be attempting to break the current Guiness World Record for the fastest Half Marathon dressed as an animal which currently held by an Emu and stands at 1hr 54 min. A minute faster than my previous performance, CAN I DO IT!!! Well I will be dressed as a lamb so lets see if I can get my spring lamb on and destroy this Emu's record![/p][p]This disease is so common, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer at some point in their lives. 48,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed each year and nearly 1,000 women die in the UK each month from Breast Cancer but on a more positive note as a direct result from Breakthrough's work fewer women die of breast cancer than they did 5 years ago.[/p][p]We all have a responsibility to do what we can to fight it so please please dig deep and give what you can by sponsoring me for this event. Here is how your money coude help a Breakthrough Scientist.[/p][p]£5 = 100 microscope slides for scientists to view breast cancer cells & learn[/p][p]£20 = 2 specialised gels needed to examine proteins yielding insights into the causes of breast cancer[/p][p]£60 = Enough nutrient broth to keep breast cancer cells alive for 3 months for study[/p][p]£125 = A pipette to help scientists measure solutions, essential for developing new ways to diagnose and treat breast cancer[/p][p]£600 = A micro centrifuge which is used to obtain pure DNA samples from breast cancer cells[/p][p]£1000 = Enough DNA extraction kits for 500 cell samples. Scientists spend a great deal of time looking at the genetic changes in the cancer cells and use these kits to extract DNA from the cells for analysis.[/p][p]All donations are gratefully received. Thank You[/p][p]Please click this link to view a great picture taken by Danny Higgins Photography which really captures the concept of my fundraising which was taken as part of his "Great Britons in Bucks" project https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151066812590827&set=a.10151010336180827.450361.91475505826&type=3 [/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
