Team story

[p][/p][p]2nd Annual Tour of Jaffna.[/p][p]Last year we rode our bikes four hundred kilometres to raise money for the Green Memorial Hospital in Jaffna, Sri Lanka - and together with your generosity we managed to raise over GBP12800 (LKR 2.65mil) for the hospital – a success! We were able to purchase the much needed medical equipment and the balance money paid for new electrical wiring, the ceiling, and a new coat of paint for the nurses hostel. We were also able to part-fund a 3 year diploma in nursing course run by the Institute of Medical Sciences at the hospital. [/p][p]It was a hugely humbling experience for us all – and it certainly opened our eyes to how fortunate we are in having the NHS take care of our medical needs – and even though it gave us a great sense of achievement, it also made us realise that there’s far more to be done to help the people of this region in terms of access to proper health care services; we so often take for granted in the developed world. Thirty years of civil conflict and economic hardship in the region has left the Green Memorial Hospital badly affected and barely able to provide basic clinical care services to the community. Therefore, we want to do more to help restore the hospital to its former position of principle medical facility in northern Sri Lanka – and help the rural communities it has served for 170 years.[/p][p]The Green Memorial Hospital is a non-profit hospital in Manipay, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Founded by Dr Samuel Friske Green from New York in 1847, it was the first mission hospital in what was then Ceylon. Starting with its first student intake a year later, the Green Memorial is one of the oldest teaching hospitals in Asia. In 2004 the hospital was found closed and abandoned by two brothers from north London who were returning to the region after 20 years with supplies in the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami. They returned with this news and soon the ‘Friends of Manipay Hospital’, a UK registered charity, was formed around a small group of selfless individuals who have worked tirelessly along with the ‘Institute of Medical Sciences -Sri Lanka’ to restore both clinical and teaching services at the hospital.[/p][p]The hospital now provides medical care with 50% of costs being subsidised by the Friends of Manipay charity. Patients who can afford to pay do so by way of a contribution, which goes towards staffing costs. A free clinic is run monthly for those who cannot afford to pay for the care. This alone is a huge financial undertaking by the charity and they need significant help with raising more funds for much needed restoration work, medical equipment, hospital furnishings and ancillary requirements. We want to help and have decided on doing another ‘Ride for Charity’ in 2018 to raise the funds needed for the restoration work - and enhance the service delivery capacity of the hospital.[/p][p]Please give generously and support me and the team Riders for Charity, which has subsequently grown to several more riders, in our effort to raise £12,000. Every penny of your donations will go directly to the ‘Friends of Manipay’ charity – our personal contribution is to self-fund our trip to Sri Lanka, ride the 400 kilometres and add to your donations to bring us as close to the target as possible. [/p][p]Thank you all in advance for your generosity – the whole team and I truly appreciate your support.[/p][p]DONATIONS: Charity Name: FRIENDS OF MANIPAY HOSPITAL – is a UK registered charity.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can make donations that will be quickly processed and passed on directly to the charity. Bank transfers can also be made directly to the charity accounts below.[/p][p]Read more at: www.ridersforcharity.com[/p][p]THE TEAM: Team Riders for Charity 2018[/p][p]Michael Arnold - Walter De Kretser - Indaka Nanayakkara - David Rasiah - JJ Farook - Palani Jegan - Haran Dharmaraja - Polly Stoker - Sujeeva Jayaratne - Ali Blackwell - Gerald Simon[/p][p][/p]
