My story

[p] STRIVE DUATHLON CHALLENGE 2018 IN AID OF BIG CHANGE[/p][p]Sardinia 31 August to 6th September 2018 - 4 DAYS OF CYCLING AND 2 OF KYACKING[/p][p] The LONG and the SHORT of it.[/p][p] The STRIVE CHALLENGE is the primary fundraiser for the charity BIG CHANGE - click here for more info. After years of looking on from the sidelines I have been challenged by my children to take part in STRIVE this year – “do it before you are really too old” they said politely.[/p][p] THE SHORT VERSION (click 'read more' below)[/p][p] I have agreed to take on the STRIVE DUATHLON challenge - (more details here). It is for an amazing cause. Please give them your money. Thanks to generous sponsorship every penny raised goes to good causes. [/p][p]I am paying all my own costs to take part in this challenge and so every penny raised will go to BIG CHANGE.[/p][p]In addition I will match £ for £ all donations made – up to a total of £1500. I very much hope that with your support we can smash my £3000 target.[/p][p]You are in Virgin Money Giving now so do it NOW NOW - PLEASE. [/p][p]Give £5, £10, £50 or £500 - just give something and make my pain worthwhile (please)![/p][p] THE LONG VERSION[/p][p]Why on earth would I agree to take it on? It may well kill me!! [/p][p]Well for one reason BIG CHANGE is an amazing charity – and I have to declare an interest – daughter Essie works for them. I am so proud that after years in the Corporate world she has found something that benefits from her abilities and she is helping to make a big difference to so may disadvantaged young people..[/p][p] [/p][p]BIG CHANGE is on a mission to support the next generation to thrive in life, not just exams. They do this by partnering with pioneering projects tackling the root causes of problems faced by young people. BIG CHANGE backs projects at a very early stage. They leverage this support by also providing a program of non-financial support over three years – allowing the partners to learn, grow, and prove their model to create long-term positive change at scale.[/p][p] [/p][p]See http://www.big-change.org and further information later.[/p][p] [/p][p]Both my daughter Essie and my son William have taken part in previous STRIVE challenges - in 2014 hiking for 6 days through the Alps and then in 2016 in a triathlon of events swimming, mountain biking and then running / hiking to the top of Mount Etna in Sicily. [/p][p] They have now dared me to take part in 2018 – as they said I will probably be the oldest – 70 next year - and slowest participant![/p][p] I am joining the second leg of the challenge cycling approximately 400 km in four days with 4,000 m climbing through the mountains and countryside of Sardinia from Pula to Porte Conte before kayaking for 2 days along the North-West Coast. We are kayaking roughly 10km a day each taking about 6 hours.[/p][p] I started cycling in 2016 before having a full knee replacement operation and I have continued since but mainly on the gentle slopes around my home town of Tenterden and the flat of Romney Marsh although I did manage to complete The Cape Town Cycle Tour in March. That was tough and it was only 109 km. I’m worried about lasting four days, 4000 metres of climbing and 400 km in the saddle. I hate to think what my body will be like at the end of that. Will I ever be able to sit down again?[/p][p] My only kayaking experience is limited to the occasional half hour or so on holiday![/p][p]You are in Virgin Money Giving now so do it NOW NOW.[/p][p]Give £10, £50 or £500 - just give something and make my pain worthwhile (please)![/p][p]THE EVEN LONGER VERSION[/p][p] Big Change is a charity that is thinking differently: focusing on preventing problems rather than treating symptoms. Their focus is around unlocking the potential of all young people in the UK - so that no matter what you are born into, you have the opportunity to thrive in life and make a positive difference to the world around you. [/p][p]They don’t run projects themselves - they find and back the best people out there with big ideas that are rethinking the skills, opportunities and support that young people need to thrive.[/p][p]With money raised so far Big Change have backed 18 projects at an early stage - many have gone on to scale nationally and change the ways things are done, held up as pioneers of a new way of doing things e.g.: [/p][p]- Frontline - rethinking children’s social work[/p][p]- Voice 21 - helping young people find their voice[/p][p]- Reclaim - giving working class young people a change to be agents of change[/p][p]- NCS - helping young people build a sense of agency by coming up with solutions to problems in their community[/p][p]- Institute for Teaching - rethinking teacher training and support[/p][p]- How to Thrive - rethinking support for teachers, parents and students around emotional wellbeing[/p][p]- The Difference - rethinking teacher training and support for excluded kids and those with behaviour problems[/p][p]This years STRIVE Challenge will support the next projects that will change the future for young people across the UK. [/p][p]Join me in helping make big change a reality. [/p][p]You are in Virgin Money Giving now so do it NOW NOW -PLEASE.[/p][p]Give £10, £50 or £500 - just give something and make my pain worthwhile (please)![/p][p][br][/p][p] [/p][p] [/p][p] [/p][p] [/p]
