Team story

[div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]With your inspirational support and incredible generosity all six of us trekked 181 km over 8 days and climbed up to 19,345 ft in altitude and on April 12th, 2014 at 4 pm we ALL (including 10 year old Tiger and 12 year old Rocky, 16 year old Liam and 18 year old Noa) successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, and the highest freestanding mountain in the world.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]On our way, we hiked through lush vegetation and got drenched from heavy rainfalls through the dense rainforest on the foothills of the mountain. We experienced the cool and clear climate of the moorland just above the tree line. We trekked through the huge temperature fluctuations and intense fog and sun radiation of the alpine desert. And finally, after 5 days of non-stop uphill marching we reached the arctic conditions of Mount Kilimanjaro's 'Barafu base camp' at 15,200 ft.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]The night before our final summit ascend we suddenly were hit by a severe snowstorm and extreme winds.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]11 climbers departed at the traditional departure time of midnight and had to turn back and were never able to summit. [/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]It was 'touch and go' for us as well. We decided to delay our departure to 5.30 am, in the hope that the weather would improve and that we would have the slightly warmer temperature of daybreak.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]Our wait was rewarded by experiencing a spectacular sunrise but about 1/3 up the mountain we were hit by gailforce winds of 120 km/hour and we had to stop and huddle for a while before ascending further.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]The temperature dropped to -11 Celsius, and breathing became extremely difficult.[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]Everybody experienced some form of altitude sickness, we battled through, vomiting, tears, windburn, knee pain, freezing cold hands and feet and complete exhaustion at the end, but somehow, after 10 hours, we managed to reach 'Uhuru Peak' ![/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]Having all of your support made all the difference ! [/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]ASANTE SANA from Tanzania ![/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]Love,[/div] [div=margin-top: 14pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;]Team Roedy[/div]
