My story

[p] We're the Chicks - Dave, Jem, Gracie, Evan and Irys. As a family, we've taken on the challenge of travelling round the UK coastline living on only a tenner a day in Mo, our 1968 Morris Traveller campervan.[/p][p] It may seem like a crazy idea, and it's certainly a challenge - five of us all squished into a tiny space for possibly up to 8 months, living on a only a tenner a day, (£5 for petrol, £5 for food), wearing the same clothes, eating a lot less than we’re used to and never quite knowing what’s round the next corner.[/p][p] Why on earth would we put ourselves through all this? I think we have a pretty good reason. [/p][p] Here’s Gracie to tell you Our Story:[/p][p] I look around me and I see the world that my generation are growing up in, I see the way we're heading and the future we're facing. I see confusion and frustration and young people that are lost. It's like a pain that won't go away, it stays with me, reminding me that I can and I need to do something to create a brighter future for myself and my generation.[/p][p] I've listened for hours as my friends talk about self harm and bullying and panic attacks and eating disorders and depression and overdoses and the list goes on. I've heard my parents tell stories of friends who’ve lost children to suicide, others who have watched their siblings die due to drug misuse and of one young lad who cried out thinking there was no-one there who cared enough to help him. I’ve watched eye-opening documentaries and I read the news every day, I see the pain and I see how hard it is to bounce back. [/p][p] I am taking on this challenge, as a young person, on behalf of my generation. To let them know that I care, my family cares and to encourage others to look around them and see where they too can make a difference in their own communities.[/p][p] I believe that what we give we get back, whether that's indifference or kindness. We all must come together and challenge our way of thinking to create a better world, for all of our sakes. [/p][p] Last year I discovered the world of sail training. I fell totally in love with the ocean and boats and the difference sail training has made in my life. It gave me purpose, challenged me in extreme circumstances, made me resilient and strong, gave me the opportunity to live and work as part of a team, taught me new practical skills and through the experience, I've made the best friends. [/p][p] The adventure of a voyage under sail has taught me so much about myself and given me the opportunity to achieve things I never thought possible. It's also shown me what I want to do with my life and future and the confidence that it has given me to take back into my everyday life is invaluable. Sail training works. I believe that with every part of my being, I’ve seen it with own eyes and I’ve felt it in my heart.[/p][p] I want all young people, especially those in need, to experience the way sail training makes you feel about yourself and the world around you. [/p][p] So, as a family, we have decided to take on this challenge to raise money and awareness for youth development and sail training charity CatZero.[/p][p] CatZero transform young lives. The programmes they run take young people and turn their lives around, creating a brighter, more positive future for a generation growing up in a society fraught with challenges and obstacles to overcome. The CatZero team believe that these kids should have a chance in life and that’s what they give them. [/p][p] Every £3,500 raised puts a young person through one of CatZero's life-changing 12 week programmes, usually culminating in a two week residential sailing voyage. We plan on donating £7,000, the cost of seven months of Chick family living expenses, to kick-start the challenge and we need your help to raise the rest. Dave and Evan have been hard at work all winter saving the money we need for this challenge and we've sold our car, now we're ready for an adventure. [/p][p] We believe in CatZero and the difference they make and that’s why we’ve decided to do all we can to support them.[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-zpQsGzejLE?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p]
