My story

[p]Thank you for stopping by my donation page. I am an extreme distance runner and I've been fundraising for many years since the death of both of my parents due to cancer.[/p][p]Using my fundraising nickname, Run Geordie Run, I am currently on a 20,000 mile circumnavigation of the world, running on land, in aid of St. Benedict's Hospice.[/p][p]The journey is being done in 9 stages with 5 having been done already.[/p][p]The current stage is:[/p][p]X) July 12th - 16th 2021 - 250 miles in 5 days around the 'Northumberland 250' route.[/p][p]While the Run Around The World is paused due to the pandemic a special intermediate stage named 'Stage X' will be done this year.[/p][p]I just so happen to turn 50 years old in July and that number has influenced this special stage in a huge way. Long time followers will remember when I ran 40 miles during the 3100 mile run across the USA on my 40th birthday. I always suspected that my next significant birthday would involve a similar feat. [/p][p]So I'm very pleased to announce that Stage X will involve 50 miles of running every day for 5 days while following the “Northumberland 250” tourist route in a clockwise direction. Stage X will start and end at Bamburgh Castle and will involve 15,000 ft of elevation. The daily start and end points are as follows:[/p][p]Day 1 - Bamburgh to West Woodburn[/p][p]Day 2 - West Woodburn to Allendale Town[/p][p]Day 3 - Allendale Town to Kielder[/p][p]Day 4 - Kielder to Kirk Yetholm[/p][p]Day 5 - Kirk Yetholm to Bamburgh Castle (via Holy Island) [/p][p]The final day promises to be fun with the safe crossing time off Holy Island (at the 34 mile point that day) ending at 6.20 pm![/p][p]The aim of Stage X is to raise funds for St. Benedict's Hospice and hit an overall charity total of £350,000. At the time of writing (4th July 21), the current around the world total is £337,516.13 where £10,688.98 has been raised in respect of Stage X. [/p][p]The daily mileage is huge and the chances of success not great (I always say that!!). I believe it promises to be a very interesting journey to follow and it’s local for once!!! This will be one of the simplest events I've done in terms of logistics but one of the most difficult to actually run. There's hardly any margin for error. Is there even any margin?[/p][p]Running against a backdrop of beautiful Northumberland, a place where I spent all of my childhood holidays is going to be very special. I vaguely remember exploring Bamburgh Castle as a 4 year old with my Mam and Dad. Donna and I were married there in 2014. To start and finish this route in such a special place is just how I'd like to be spending my 50th birthday. I'm not one for gifts and parties. Hitting the fundraising target for the Hospice will be all the gift I really want. [/p][p]Whatever the state of the world this summer I truly believe that this won’t have to be cancelled. I will have a small support team at best. The worst case scenario is that I will run it unsupported. So whatever the rules/tiers/bubbles etc I'm optimistic of being allowed to run the 250 miles round Northumberland.[/p][p]The level of difficulty means that I'm certain that Stage X is definitely worthy of sponsorship. 250 miles in 5 days is quite a task I'm sure you'll agree.[/p][p]£10688.98 raised for St. Benedict's Hospice so far (as at 4th July 21).[/p][p]The next stage once it's safe to continue is:[/p][p]6) 202? - The Road to Nur Sultan (Formerly Astana)[/p][p]Kiev, Ukraine to Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan. 2000 miles. [/p][p]The previous stages were:[/p][p]1) 2007 - UK (£51,634 raised)[/p][p]John O'Groats to Lands End. 874 miles in 37 days.[/p][p]2) 2011 - USA (£105,717.80 raised)[/p][p]Huntington Beach, California to Coney Island New York. 3,100 miles in 100 days.[/p][p]3) 2013 - Australia (£55,126.60 raised)[/p][p]Cottesloe Beach, Perth to Shellharbour, Sydney. 2,384 miles in 82 days.[/p][p]4) 2016 - Europe (£55,147.25 raised)[/p][p]Lisbon, Portugal to Belgrade, Serbia. 2,633 miles in 83 days. [/p][p]5) 2018 - The Road to Astana (Part 1) (£59,041.50 raised)[/p][p]Belgrade, Serbia to Kiev, Ukraine. 808 miles.[/p][p]The future stages are:[/p][p]7) 2023 - China[/p][p]Astana, Kazakhstan to Shanghai, China. 3500 miles.[/p][p]8) 2025 - Japan[/p][p]Cape Sata to Cape Soya. 2300 miles.[/p][p]9) 2027 - New Zealand[/p][p]Northerly tip of North Island to Southerly tip of South Island. 2309 miles.[/p][p]In total, that's 20,000 miles around the world, on 4 continents, through 20 countries.[/p][p]A detailed blog of the journey so far around the world can be read at www.rungeordierun.com.[/p][p]Any donation made, in aid of St. Benedict's Hospice, no matter how large or small, will be greatly appreciated. [/p][p]Thanks in anticipation of your kind support.[/p][p]Mark[/p][p]Overall totals raised to date around the world (as at 15/09/19):[/p][p]St. Benedict's Hospice - £134,659.75[/p][p]North of England Children's Cancer Research - £250.00[/p][p]The Children's Foundation - £145,378.56[/p][p]The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation - £48,911.42[/p][p]Useful Vision - £8,200.37[/p][p]GRAND TOTAL - £329,199.73[/p]
