My story

[p]Dear Family & Friends,[/p][p]As many of you know, towards the end of 2016, the old man passed away. Captain Andrew Brooking was a Master Mariner, alumni of HMS Conway, The Merchant Navy, Shell, Mobil Oil, and a member of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights. At his funeral we collected for the RNLI, a charity very close to my father’s heart.[/p][p]Subsequently, I ran the London Marathon in 2017 for the RNLI to raise more funds for a truly great charity, and have done every year since. I am running for them again in 2020, and will continue to do so for as long as they will have me! [/p][p]Unbelievably, the RNLI is a non-government funded charity, and it really needs our support. It costs nearly £500,000 a day to run the RNLI and they are completely reliant on charitable donations. They aid on average over 22 people a day through lifeboat launches and aid nearly 25,000 people every year. Incredibly, 98% of the funds received by the RNLI are charitable, and 95% of all the people working for the RNLI are volunteers! [/p][p]As a Londoner, who frequently runs past the Tower Lifeboat Station by Embankment, the value of the RNLI really hits home. It is the busiest lifeboat station in the UK, saving hundreds of lives, some of which are selfie stick tourists who have fallen off of one of London’s many fine bridges or far more tragically, many suicide attempts. Yet still they are not deemed worthy of meaningful government funding! [/p][p]I appreciate that so many people bring a special story and charity with them when they run a marathon, but I hope you can support me in my efforts to honour my father’s maritime legacy and help a charity that is so intrinsically important to the Island we call home![/p][p]Cheers[/p][p][br][/p]
