My story

[p]Delayed to 2021 due to COVID-19. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Monday 23rd June 2014. A day that will live with me forever, even though I don’t remember a thing! [/p][p][br][/p][p]I had been laid up since the middle of the week before with what I (and confirmed by medical staff) thought was a bad sinus infection. When I revisited the surgery when my condition worsened, I was ordered to go home, pack a bag, and head straight to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.[/p][p][br][/p][p]However, I did not make it that far. While packing my bag, I collapsed and suffered one of an estimated three seizures. [/p][p][br][/p][p]A couple of days later I woke up in the Intensive Care Unit and was told that I would be heading straight to surgery for a craniotomy. This procedure was to relieve a subdural empyema (an abscess on the brain caused by the sinus infection). It was therefore necessary for the medical team to bore a hole in to my skull to relieve the pressure and to remove the abscess. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Thankfully the operation was a success (barring a terrible haircut) and after three weeks in Ward 205 and a further month recovering at home – I started my return to work. [/p][p][br][/p][p]However, after several months laid up, and a substantially longer period of feeling sorry for myself – I had put on some pounds, and it was time to do something about it. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I took up running in early 2016, with an aim to complete that years Baker Hughes 10k; however I quickly caught the bug, and started competing in the weekly parkrun at the beach, and have completed several 10k’s and multiple half-marathons, most recently completing the 2019 Great Scottish Run in a PB of 01:49:47.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Now for the big challenge…...[/p][p][br][/p][p]I have been trying to get into one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors for the last couple of years with no joy, but finally got some good news towards the end of last year. On Sunday 27th September, I shall be running the BMW Berlin Marathon.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I have decided to run in support of the ‘Friends of the Neuro Ward’, to help raise awareness and vital funds for this charity, who provide such brilliant care and comfort to their patients. The money shall be split between Ward 205 ARI and the Neuro Rehab Unit at Woodend Hospital.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I have self-funded the trip, so all money raised shall go towards a truly worthy cause which played a major role in both saving my life and helping me with my recovery and beyond.
