My story

[p]Hiya - My name is Shirley Russo and thanks for visiting my page – I am raising money for the Jesuit Missions by running the London Marathon as part of their Team on April 28th, 2019. [/p][p]I am representing St Wilfrid’s Parish in Preston, Lancashire and also St Francis Xavier's Parish in Liverpool, Merseyside as part of the Jesuit Missions' 2019 Team. I have thought of running the London Marathon for many years without achieving this dream. As usual life has a funny way of making decisions for us but here I am finally living the dream and being accepted to run for the Jesuit Missions’ 2019 Marathon Team. I am so excited but equally conscious of the responsibility of completing this challenge and not letting down those that your donation will help through the amazing work that Jesuit Missions carry out. Although I have kept fit in various ways, running was never on the agenda. I have only been running for approximately 1 year so running the marathon is certainly going to be a challenge for me and I am actually now enjoying running as a sport. I was told recently that most women when having a mid-life crisis usually buy themselves a convertible... not run the London Marathon![/p][p]If I mange to reach my target for fundraising by equalling the number of times that I have heard this venture will most likely kill me then so be it! But this is not about me – it is about those less fortunate, so please support me by donating and changing someone’s life forever. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p]I am running the London Marathon in 2019 in memory of Fr Victor-Luke Odhiambo SJ, a 62-year-old Jesuit priest who was tragically murdered in South Sudan in November 2018.[/p][p]Fr Victor-Luke was a Jesuit priest who chose to work in one of the most dangerous and difficult places on earth. He was deeply committed to the people of South Sudan where he had been working for the last ten years. Fr Victor-Luke lived in Cuiebet where he worked at the local teacher training centre, where he also had big plans to build a new college. Sadly, he was killed by assailants who broke into his accommodation during the night. [/p][p]South Sudan has been struggling through a civil war since 2013 displacing hundreds of thousands of people and killing around 400, 000. It has the highest proportion of out of school children in the world. The UN claims that up to 2.4 million children in South Sudan are not receiving an education. Fr Victor-Luke wanted to change this. Jesuit Missions wants to continue his legacy by supporting the teacher training centre where he worked and to continue his plans to educate and inspire as many South Sudanese children to go to school as possible.[/p][p]Jesuit Missions is the international development agency and mission office for the Jesuits in Britain. For over 50 years it has supported vulnerable communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America.[/p][p]The money I raise from running the London Marathon this year will go to support Jesuit Missions life changing work across the world. This year, amongst other things, they are supporting Loyola Secondary school in Wau, South Sudan. Their current priorities are to provide a new school bus, enhancing the safety and protection of the students, the building of new toilets to support the growing school population and an additional water tower to supply more water points to the students.[/p][p]Thank you for all that you are able to give.[/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]I've just completed my first 10 mile race in November- great experience and good training - thanks to Preston Harriers for an amazing experience - the marshalls were incredible![/p][p]Just completed my first half marathon - 6th January - on a bit of a high but I'm sure I'll be suffering tomorrow. Great experience and thanks to Fylde Coast Runners for organising the event.[/p][p]Just become a member of Red Rose Road Runners - love running with them on Thursdays as part of my training and becoming a member of their team.[/p]
