My story

[p]Running The Virgin Money London Marathon is definitely on my bucket list and something I've dreamed of taking on, since I first took up running back in 2016 - having never ran before in my life![/p][p]I'll be raising money for The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, where I work as Cluster Contract Manager, based at our Pannel Croft Village, in Birmingham.[/p][p]Once weighing 21 stone, I decided to make the change and get healthy, for the sake of my son, Daniel. In the first two years, I lost six stone, through a change in my diet and more exercise (and thanks to Pannel Croft's 'Biggest Loser' which helped me keep on track!). [/p][p]Back then, if somebody had told me I would be running a Marathon, I would have laughed and told them not to be so daft but here I am today, training almost every day ahead of this once-in-a-lifetime challenge.[/p][p]Having worked at ExtraCare for the past four years, I feel extremely passionately about raising money for the charity. They provide a great community for older people and I really believe in their vision: to create better lives for older people.[/p][p]I’ve seen people who move in, who were once frightened to leave their house and now, they’re so sociable. ExtraCare can really help, as much or as little as people want them to.[/p][p]We’re like a family here, residents, staff and volunteers, so I’ll definitely be wearing the ExtraCare logo with pride when I run and the more money I raise, the better.[/p][p]ExtraCare's CEO Mick Laverty will be passing on the 'Marathon Baton' to me, after running the 26-mile route and raising £57,000 for the charity, with a time of four-and-a-half-hours.[/p][p]I might not reach £57,000 but any money I can raise, I'll be extremely grateful for and you really will make a big difference to the lives of older people - so thank you.[/p][p]A registered charity since 1988, the ExtraCare Charitable Trust is based in Coventry and operates 20 retirement villages and schemes, located in central, south and north midlands and the north west and is developing a new village in Solihull which opens in 2021. Its Lark Hill village in Nottingham, the largest retirement village in the UK, recently featured in the second series of BAFTA nominated Old People’s Home for 4-Year Olds on Channel 4.[/p][p]A study conducted with Aston University and Lancaster Universities, published in April 2019, found that residents living in ExtraCare’s retirement villages showed a reduction in their dependence on GP and hospital services, leading to a 38% reduction in NHS costs per year. Residents' levels of exercise increased by 75%, while their anxiety levels dropped by 23%; meanwhile, 86.5% reported never or hardly ever feeling lonely.[/p][p][br][/p]
