My story

[p]Bonjour, thank you for visiting my page. [/p][p]I will be running my very first marathon, London Marathon the 40th race, now changed to a Virtual race on October 4th, 2020. I will be running for a very worthy cause, an amazing charity close to my heart, Starlight Children Foundation, which helps bring a smile to ill children. Thanks to people's donations, Starlight offers seriously ill children and their family a break from the reality of the treatment, by providing play and distraction to the children in the most challenging times.[/p][p]This charity is particularly close to my heart, as two years ago, my then 7-year old son was admitted in a Starlight ward at hospital for 3 nights, with food stuck in his throat. After more than 20 hours waiting with no progress and a very hungry, thirsty, frightened child and mummy, my boy then had to undertake an endoscopy, under full anaesthetics, which means that a camera was inserted inside his throat to help push the "intruder". He subsequently suffered from chest pains, difficulties swallowing, weight loss, stomach pains and vomiting, nausea and grey coloured skin (among other symptoms). After a series of more endoscopies with biopsies over the next months, he was subsequently diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease damaging his oesophagus. He is now in remission, thanks to his stamina in undergoing all these procedures and undertaking a severe diet for 9 months (no wheat, milk, soya, fish&shellfish, nuts, eggs). He is a very brave boy, very determined and he never gave up on his active life, and was lucky to have the support of his brother and sister, always smiling despite our numerous hospital visits. [/p][p]The care we received at hospital from the Starlight team was really heart-lifting, it kept our spirits up throughout. Olivier was lucky to play the harp, make slime on his sick bed, and simply play. During his stay, in the middle of the frightening nights with the beep of the machines and the running steps of the medical staff down the corridor, I realised how very blessed we are. There are indeed very sick children, who have to go to hospital much more regularly.[/p][p]I guess this brings me to my determination to running my first marathon, which is not something I would have been particularly inclined to in my younger life. I want to run for helping this amazing children charity, to show my gratitude to life, I want to run it to show my 3 children that we can try our best with everything in life, I want to run it because I can. [/p][p]I took on running in May 2018 as Maman (suffering from Alzheimer's) turned 75, thanks to the push from my brilliant sister-in-law. I remember my first 5km race prior to this, on my late dad's birthday, together with my eldest son, Jerome. Jerome was brilliant of course, and finished 10mins ahead of me. I myself burst into tears at the arrival, as it seemed then that running just wasn't my thing. So when I subsequently persevered and completed my first half marathon, in the time of 2 hours 10, I thought, yes I can do it! [/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities.[/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donation.[/p][p]Yours sincerely,[/p][p]Solene[/p]
