Team story

[p]Many people think that Dementia is a natural part of aging, but unfortunately it’s not. It is in fact a disease and now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, affecting over 800,000 people across the UK. Dementia attacks your brain, stripping it back, destroying it, destroying you, until it takes your life. And there is no cure.[/p] [p]For many of the riders taking part in this challenge, they have been personally affected by Dementia. For Virginia it is her dad who has Dementia and stRIDE17 is her way of trying to play a part in raising awareness and funds to fight this currently incurable disease.[/p] [p]What is stRIDE17?[/p] [p] ‘Healthy body, healthy mind’. Leading an active life, eating your greens and other things that are good for us, can all play an important role in looking after our brains and can go a long way to preventing Dementia.[/p] [p]For someone with Dementia, memories from the past often come to the forefront of their minds. So we wanted to combine the message of leading an active healthy lifestyle with delving into memories from our Dads life, by visiting places which hold special memories for him and our family. And that’s how we came up with stRIDE17.[/p] [p]Over 8 days in August 2017, a team of brilliantly inspirational women, will embark on a 450 mile cycle, visiting places that are significant in both our dads and our family’s lives. From our grand depart in Liverpool where my dad grew up and met our wonderful mum, to finishing in Shrewsbury where my sister and I got to enjoy an amazing childhood, full of love and happy memories. And in between, we will visit places that ooze nostalgia for our family; the Isle of Man, the Lake District and North Wales. And just to make sure we can get as many people involved as possible, we have thrown in a couple of walks for good measure. [/p] [p]If you want to get involved, whether it be running your own fundraising event or taking part in some of the challenge, then email stride17info@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook @stride17[/p]
