My story

[p][img][/img]I started cycling 8 years ago, having ended my relationship with running the day after I ran the London Marathon.[/p][p]I’ve ridden a lot of events since then but, because I ride a lot, they all just felt like ‘another ride’ and weren’t a big enough personal challenge for me to ask people for sponsorship. [/p][p]The Strive Challenge is different. It’s bigger than anything I’ve ever done before and even more of a challenge than the London Marathon.[/p][p]It’s 5 days across the French Alps, taking on some of the biggest, toughest climbs. In total I’ll be climbing over 6,000 metres – living in Norfolk, it would take well over a month of solid riding to climb anywhere near that! [/p][p]Why am I doing this? Well, I love cycling and to have the opportunity to ride up some of the most iconic climbs on the planet is very exciting (I can guarantee I won’t be saying that when I’m actually on them!)[/p][p]As well as that, because it is such a challenge, it means I can use it as an opportunity to do something good in the world. [/p][p]And that good is to support the amazing charity Big Change. Their mission is to support the next generation to thrive in live. I was fortunate growing up, given plenty of support and opportunity to identify a path I wanted to follow and develop the skills I needed to take it. There’s thousands of kids who don’t get access to that support and Big Change is all about changing that. They've identified 3 key focus areas - teaching, oracy and broadening horizons. [/p][p]It's scary to think 26% of teachers are on stress related medication and 40% leave within 5 years of qualifying. Just as concerning is that an average inner-city child will only speak 4 words in a lesson, and those from low-income families will have heard 30 million fewer words than those from high-income families by the time they leave school. [/p][p]I hope I’m giving my kids the same support and opportunities I had, and it will be great to show them that, no matter how hard the challenge, anything is possible. [/p][p]Thanks for your support, it really means a lot.[/p]
