Team story

[lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Ik zal je nooit vergeten (I will never forget you)[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Update June 2016[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2015 whilst we completed our 3 challenges in memory of Ben. You donated a wonderful amount of money to two very worry charities close to Ben's parents hearts and I know that they are really grateful.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Time moves on very quickly and we are now very close to the second anniversary of the crash so it is quite appropriate that we share what we are doing this year to celebrate Ben's life.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]In September Debbie and I will repeat our Challenge Weymouth experience by racing Challenge Almere-Amsterdam. The race itself is exactly the same as Weymouth and we will both undertake the same legs. What makes it special for us, of course is that Amsterdam was the departure point for flight MH17 and the greatest proportion of passengers by far were Dutch. So we will be honouring Ben in a special location surrounded by a population who were also so terribly affected by the tragedy. To make it even more special we are going to be joined by three close friends, Jon, Marc and Dave who are also showing their solidarity by taking on Challenge Almere-Amsterdam half.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]As a lead in to this we have also taken the opportunity to take part in a wonderful event that happens on the day of the second anniversary. Another really fitting opportunity to keep Ben's memory alive. We'll share more details of this over the next couple of weeks.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Thank you for taking the trouble to read this if you would like to read more about the 2015 challenges and the progress in 2016 please have a look at our blog[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]www.triblogs.com/blog/timp[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]On July 17[sup]th[/sup] 2014 our 20 year old nephew Ben was commencing a journey of a lifetime, en route to the University of Western Australia to undertake a six month placement as part of his International Business studies degree from Loughborough University. Tragically he and 297 other passengers and crew were killed when Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 crashed in Ukraine.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]It is fast approaching the first anniversary of that fateful day and still the cause of the crash remains speculation. Whilst it won’t change the outcome, knowing how and why it happened may help to bring some form of closure to family and friends.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]At the memorial service held in the Netherlands at the end of 2014 one of the speakers made a very profound observation.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]“a person can die twice, once when they actually die and secondly when they are no longer remembered by family and friends”[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Well we are determined that for as long as we live we will do our part to make sure that Ben’s memory lives on.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]So, to commemorate the first anniversary of the crash and honour Ben’s love of sport we have entered three events that will challenge us whilst at the same time act as a vehicle to raise money for two very worthy charities.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]The events are:[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]The Cotswold 226, an Iron distance triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle, 26.2 mile run)[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Adidas Thunder Run, a trail race where as a team you run as many 10k laps as possible in 24 hours[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Challenge Weymouth, another Iron distance triathlon. This time as a relay with Debbie running the marathon and Tim swimming and cycling.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]To make things a little more challenging the events all happen over a period of 8 weeks and we have a combined age of 105![/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]The two charities were chosen by Ben’s parents and to date through various activities and donations over £8,000 has been raised. They are:[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Teenage Cancer Trust[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Street Games[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]If you feel able to make a small donation that would be fantastic, the charities will be extremely grateful and it will help keep us motivated through the three events. Most importantly by simply reading this you are helping to keep Ben’s memory alive.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]We’ll keep you up to date with progress and when we’re done we’ll share the crazy challenge that we’ve entered in March 2016.[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Thanks for reading[/p][lt]p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"[gt]Tim & Debbie[/p]
