Team story

[p]In June, a group of family and friends will be taking part in the National Three Peaks Challenge in memory of my dad, Brian Robertson who passed away last year after a short 11 week battle with Pancreatic Cancer. We will be walking to raise money for the charities that helped my dad throughout his illness, The Maggie's Centre, Pancreatic Cancer Scotland and Macmillan Cancer Support.[/p][p]The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden. Walking 23 miles, Climbing 10,052ft and travelling 462 miles, all within 24 hours! We have chosen this challenge specifically as my dad had actually taken part in it himself and hill walking was one of his greatest passions. [/p][p]Forty years ago, 3% of people diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer survived five years or more. That figure is still 3%.Each year around 9,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It has the lowest survival rate of all 21 common cancers, with only 3% of those diagnosed living for 5 years post diagnosis and only 1% living for 10 years. Despite its high mortality rate and lack of improvement in chances of survival, pancreatic cancer has attracted little research funding in comparison with many other cancers - currently less than 2% of research funding from the major funding bodies. The focus of Pancreatic Cancer Scotland is to improve the standard of healthcare available to patients with pancreatic cancer across Scotland. As a small charity, they co-fund research projects within Scotland as well as offering funding to individual researchers and research centres across Scotland.[/p][p]The Maggie’s Centre is a charity that offers free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends through support centres. Maggie’s relies almost entirely on voluntary donations.[/p][p]Macmillan’s ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire others to do the same. Macmillan belive Life with cancer is still life. Right from the moment you’re diagnosed, through your treatment and beyond, Macmillan are a constant source of support, providing the energy and inspiration to help take back control of your life, and feel more like yourself again.[/p]
