My story

[p]If you’ve just found The Slow Race, let me first introduce us both. We’re Jennie and Dan, a British couple who set off cycling from the UK to New Zealand in April 2018. Read about our adventures at theslowrace.com.[/p][p]This trip was never intended as a charity ride, instead being an adventurous personal challenge for us both. If you’ve followed us from the beginning, you’ll know the only thing we’ve raised in the last eleven months is a pint (I’ve made that joke before; it’s dead in the water isn’t it?). Yet after arriving in Kenya and being welcomed to camp at several schools, we wanted to give a little back. A thanks for all the school yard camp spots. [/p][p]Education really is the best investment — give a child a proper education and you arm them with the tools to better their future. That’s why we’ve decided to fundraise for East Africa Children’s Project. They’re a small charity based in Brighton, UK run solely by volunteers in their spare time. That means 100% of your donation goes to helping schools, rather than also stretching to cover wages, office rent, advertising, and other such costs that come with running a much larger charity.[/p][p]East Africa Children’s Project describes itself as a drop in the ocean, but they’ve clearly made a huge difference to so many children’s lives in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. They’re currently fundraising to build a girls’ dormitory at Joy’s Children’s Centre in Kenya. Some of their other recent projects include:[/p][p]• Twinned three UK schools with three in East Africa, which has not only created regularly fundraising opportunities, but also opened up invaluable channels of communication between the students from different hemispheres.[/p][p]• Provided school uniforms for children at Faith School in Busia, Uganda. The students were asked what they wanted most and it was to look like other school children.[/p][p]• Also raised funds to build a set of brick classrooms for Faith School.[/p][p]• Funded the completion of the centre building and toilets, as well as providing sleeping mats, at POPP Day Care Centre in Tanzania.[/p][p]Here’s where you come in. We’ve skipped a few nights in a hotel to get the pot going, but we need your help to top it up, as we continue our ride around East Africa until June. [/p][p]And don’t forget: if you are a UK Tax payer, please, please, please tick Gift Aid. It’s at no extra cost to you, but means EACP can claim the Tax back on your donation. That’s an extra £2.50 for every £10 donated. Every penny really does count.[/p][p]Ta very much.[/p][p]Jennie & Dan[/p]
