Team story

[p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Target Update[/span][/p][p]WOW!! You're about to blitz our target of £20,000. And amazingly, on the day the Smugglers take to the water to start their 289mile Challenge, you've done it. You have all been so wonderfully generous. An almighty THANKYOU from us and our two charities.[/p][p]But we cannot stop there I hear you fellow Smugglers cry...Can we? So let's go for £30,000[/p][p][span=text-decoration: underline;]What is The Smugglers’ Challenge?[/span][/p] [p]Our team of four, including two RNLI volunteers, is planning to prone paddle board 289 miles around the coast of Cornwall starting at Mayflower Steps, The Barbican, Plymouth and finishing (hopefully!) at the lock gates, Bude, on the 8[sup]th[/sup] September - National ‘Stand Up For Cancer’ Day.[/p][p]With your help we hope to smash our fundraising target of £20,000. [/p] [p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Our track record[/span][/p] [p]After the success of the epic 3 Peaks Row Challenge back in 2011 that involved 389 miles rowing, 62 miles running and 27 miles cycling ([span=text-decoration: underline;]raising over £25,000 for charity[/span]) Brown approached Liam and suggested doing another fundraiser. Having himself been recently diagnosed with a brain tumour, Brown was motivated by his first-hand experience of the huge impact cancer has on countless people and their loved ones - The Smugglers’ Challenge was born.[/p] [p][span=text-decoration: underline;]The aim[/span] is to raise as much money for both the nationally renowned charity, Cancer Research UK, together with South West cancer charity, Force, in recognition of the great work they do with regard to research development and patient/family care.[/p] [p]Generous individual and small business donors are supporting the challenge with equipment and provisions (including safety Yacht, 10 day food supplies, wetsuits and the paddle board which is the very one Olympian rower James Cracknell used for his channel crossing) but we are requesting donations from you to go directly to the chosen charities.[/p] [p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Fact:[/span] In Exeter radiology department alone there is an average of 63 newly diagnosed starters per week just like Brown.[/p] [p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Research is imperative[/span] as early stage cancer treatment is significantly less expensive than treatment for advanced disease:[/p][p]•               For colon cancer, stage 1 treatment costs £3,373, whereas stage 4 treatment costs £12,519[/p] [p]•               For rectal cancer, stage 1 treatment costs £4,449, whereas stage 4 treatment costs £11,815[/p] [p]•               For lung cancer, stage 1 treatment costs £7,952, whereas stage 4 treatment costs £13,078[/p] [p]•               For ovarian cancer, stage 1 treatment costs £5,328, whereas stage 4 treatment costs £15,081[/p][p]£100 covers the cost of giving one patient the Cytosponge test and analysing their results in the lab to diagnose early stages of oesophageal cancer.[/p] [p]£150 covers cancer research funding for a day.[/p] [p]£270 covers the cost of a trial for a day to find the best treatment for children with a rare type of leukaemia, whose cancer has come back after treatment.[/p] [p]£400 is the cost of running Cancer Chat for one day helping thousands of people through very difficult times.[/p] [p]£500 covers physio/exercise service in house for one week.[/p] [p]£750 provides children/family service for a week.[/p] [p]£1,000 covers Force outreach services for one day.[/p] [p]£1,250 is the Force Centre running cost for half a day.[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hPvOeZUwZiA?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo]
