My story

[p]THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS DONATED![/p][p]I completed my first marathon in a time of 3:39:15.[/p][p]On Sunday 4th October, after an agonising 6 month delay due to Coronavirus, I will be running my first ever marathon. The London Marathon is the world's largest annual fundraising event and I am absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to run for Alzheimer's Research UK in my first year of applying. I've now trained so much that there is absolutely no excuse for me not to run a great time - no pressure![/p][p]I'm sure that pretty much all of us have been affected by Alzheimer's or Dementia in some way, whether that be supporting a family member who is suffering, or knowing somebody who is. Globally, the numbers of people living with dementia will increase from 50 million in 2018, to 152 million in 2050, a 204% increase. The economic impact of dementia is greater than cancer and heart disease combined - the cost of dementia in the UK is expected to more than double in the next 25 years. [/p][p]Personally, I have witnessed two of the greatest women in my life have their worlds turned upside down by Alzheimer's/Dementia; dearest Granny Lambert (Olive), my doppelganger, who passed away in January 2018 after a long and painful decline from health, and Grandi (Margaret), who is being wonderfully cared for at The Elms, a specialist Dementia care home in Edinburgh. Seeing both of my grandmothers go from cartwheeling across the lawn at home (Grandi), or cooking up a storm in the kitchen (Granny L), to being unable to recognise their own family, or make sentences in Grandi's case, has been truly heartbreaking for all of us. The love, energy, time and money that my family has poured into supporting these amazing women is the inspiration behind this slightly absurd but amazing challenge of running 26.2 miles in a hopefully respectable time.[/p][p]So, friends, family, colleagues and wonderful strangers - let's pull together to support the many people who are affected by this disease and pave the way for new treatment.[/p][p]Any donations, small or large, will be hugely appreciated and will help enable Alzheimer's Research UK's mission to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025. [/p][p]COMPETITION TIME:[/p][p]For those of you who are unlucky enough to have witnessed my competitive streak, it's probably no surprise to you that I'd like to host a mini competition. When you donate, I invite you to post in the comments section below your predicted finishing time for my race! The individual who predicts the time closest to my actual finishing time will be the lucky recipient of a magnum of champagne (it'll be nice stuff - Knight Frank clients have good taste!).[/p][p]Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU for your support and I'll see you at the finish line :).[/p][p]RACE DAY SUPPORTERS ENCOURAGED![/p][p]Lots of love,[/p][p]Toto xxx [/p]
