Team story

[p]At the end of August I shall set off on an epic cycle ride across the Trans Pennine Trail to raise money for the James Watson fund. It will be around 240 miles over 5 days, and will involve some significant checkpoints along the route. You can follow on through my blog at http://www.nickwalkley.com, or through facebook/twitter updates.[/p][p]I have just finished studying trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music, London and was supported in part by some funding from the James Watson. I was the first person to benefit from this initiative set up between Tom and Will Watson, Jim’s sons, and the Royal Academy. The fund exists to help students realise their full potential, which sometimes may lie beyond their financial means. In my case, I was pulling all the resources I could together to cover my fees and living expenses, but was still playing on a battered old trumpet which I was told more than once by my teachers had passed its 'best before' date! With assistance from the fund I was able to purchase an instrument of more suitable quality, and my playing immediately found a new level to move on from.  I am now attempting to raise money for this new fund so that other promising and dedicated students can benefit and not face limits set by financial restriction. [/p][p]James Watson was head of brass at the Royal Academy until around 3 years ago when he passed away suddenly. Although my time at RAM did not coincide with Jim's, he was still an inspirational figure to me and a legend within the trumpet playing community.    [/p][p]During my time at RAM we have also lost two other great trumpeters who were on the teaching staff – Derek Watkins and very recently Rod Franks. These are personal heroes of mine who have come from similar brass band backgrounds and continue to inspire me on my own journey. On the trail I will ride past many locations with a close association to these men and it seems fitting to ride this in memory of them and to raise money to help educate a future generation of trumpeters, a cause they each felt passionately about.[/p][p]I plan to ride the Trans Pennine Trail from Southport to Hull between 30[sup]th[/sup] Aug and 5[sup]th[/sup] Sept, in honour of Jim, Rod and Derek. Along the way I shall visit locations linked to them, as well as revisiting the area I initially grew up in and bands who helped establish us in our respective careers.  [/p][p]For more information on the fund please visit http://www.jameswatsonfund.co.uk/[/p]
