My story

[p]On the 6th September 2018 I left the UK to cycle from London to Cape Town. The journey would take me through Europe & down to Athens where I would fly to Cairo to start the African stage of my trip.[/p][p]Initially, fundraising for charity wasn't part of my plan when I decided to do this trip. I wanted to do it for my own personal reasons; travel the world in a cost effective, eco-friendly way but to especially to break away from the mould of how society assumes how your life should play out. I felt there must be other ways to live, so what a better way to find out than to explore the world & live within simple means on a bicycle. I also thought the added pressure of fundraising would make an already challenging journey more intangible.[/p][p]I always intended to leave the door open to working with a charity & decided I would revisit the idea whilst on the road & once I felt I could give it more of my attention & energy. Travelling is a great privilege that isn't available to everyone & due to the nature of this epic journey I could have an opportunity to use any interest in my trip to also raise awareness & funds for some worthy causes. I now feel that I'm able to do this & will dedicate the rest of my journey to these charities.[/p][p]As I'm starting this fundraising campaign for Cyclists Fighting Cancer & Re-Cycle quite late in my journey, my initial target is to raise £1,000, but I hope we can exceed this.[/p][p]Thanks in advance for your support & donations.[/p][p]Cyclists Fighting Cancer[/p][p]Having travelled for over 10,000km now, I fully appreciate the humble bicycle as a means of transportation, however, I've also personally felt the mental health & physical benefits that cycling can bring to you. A bicycle is more than a useful tool to get you from A to B.[/p][p]After coming across Cyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC) on social media & learning more about what they do, I have decided that I would love to fundraise & raise awareness for a charity that uses the bicycle to empower children to regain their physical fitness, strength and confidence by giving them new bikes, adapted trikes, tandems, other equipment and support. [/p][p]I completely stand behind the work the that Cyclists Fighting Cancer are doing, the research they are funding & the lives they are helping. I believe CFC can really make a difference & I'm really excited to work with them.[/p][p]Re-Cycle[/p][p]Currently I'm at the half way point on my bike journey from London to Cape Town & I've passed through some extremely challenging environments for people to live in & have personally witnessed the daily struggle they endure, as well as, the benefits charities can bring to African communities. [/p][p]Through my time cycling in Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia & Kenya, I've also seen how powerful & useful the simple bicycle can be to people living in the developing world. Therefore, I've decided to raise awareness & fundraise for the charity Re-Cycle. [/p][p]Re-Cycle not only accept old or unwanted bikes back in the UK & send them to rural communities in Africa, but they also work on specific projects that provide bikes to children who live far away from school to make their journey considerably shorter; improving their overall attendance & education. As well as this, they need to keep these bikes safe & working properly so they train local mechanics to maintain the bikes. Ultimately, allowing them to help the community but also providing useful skills they might be able to earn a living from.[/p][p]I strongly believe that empowering people to change their situation is much more rewarding & dignifying for those on the receiving end & giving unwanted bikes to people has the potential to do this. I'm really happy I discovered Re-Cycle, I think their projects are amazing & can help those who need a bit of assistance to improve their lives.[/p][p]Stay up-to-date with my progress on the bike & fundraising:[/p][p]Website: https://www.travellingontread.com/[/p][p]Instagram: @craigs_travels_on_tread[/p][p]Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/travellingontread/[/p]

An amazing achievement Craig. Bicycles are wonderful. If you get the chance, have a look at a film called Motherload about women using cargo bikes to transport kids around. We watched it last month after doing the Critical Mass bike ride in Southampton.
