My story

[p]Hi! I’m Penny. Thanks for visiting my page.[/p][p]I‘m fundraising for the charity United Response on behalf of UKi Direct, a Business Insurance Broker based in Easingwold. This national charity supports an amazing local day service, The Boot Shop, to help people with disabilities in the area. Like many charities they are struggling with recent cut backs and rely a great deal on charitable donations.[/p][p]What is The Boot Shop? [/p][p] The Boot Shop is a converted Victorian home in Easingwold which acts as a base in the community for young people and adults with learning disabilities, autism and stress related or physical illnesses. People come here to a relaxed environment, away from home, where they can take part in workshops, meet others and learn new skills. They even get a chance to be part of a small business, earning money from their hard work.[/p][p]The staff that work here are great: they organise a big variety of activities including drama and music groups, cookery, crafts and furniture restoration. They have even arranged work on a nearby archaeological dig, all to encourage new skills, new experiences and help people establish their identity and control over their lives. I love the way the emphasis is on having fun, but also encouraging responsibility and individuality. [/p][p]My great niece, Chloe, who is 16, has severe learning difficulties and relies on just such a service. I want to help young people like her make the most of their lives and all money raised will go towards keeping The Boot Shop going.[/p][p]Where do your donations go? [/p][p]Currently, The Boot Shop plan to renovate their outside area for people to work, sit and eat. They are doing a lot of the work themselves, but need help buying building materials. Another recent project is the Sensory Group which is held every week in our local leisure centre. Drama, music, crafting and storytelling all help people to detox from stress and recharge their batteries … plus it’s a good fun social time! It costs £100 a month to fund the group.[/p][p]What and When?[/p][p]On Sunday 8th September I’m tackling GNR 19 which is the largest half marathon in the world. This year will be my 12th year running and will be my last. It is 13.1 miles long there’ll be in excess of 50,000 runners, so it’s a challenge but I’m looking forward to it.[/p][p]Being my last Great North Run it’s not about what time I make it over the finishing line, but about raising as much money as possible for this wonderful charity. So please dig deep as I will be digging deep in those last few miles. What will keep me going is the thought of the people I am doing it for, which will definitely spur me on![/p][p]Thank you in anticipation for your kind donations. No donation too small.[/p][p]Let’s smash it for The Boot Shop together![/p][p]Thank You :)[/p][p]Penny x[/p][p][br][/p]
