My story

[p]This September I will be taking part in stage 1 of the Virgin Strive Challenge. It’s a gruelling duathlon of four days, covering 400km with 4000m of climbing across Sardinia. We will then swap our bikes for sea kayaks where we will embark on two 8-10 hour days of sea kayaking crossing from the coast of Sardinia to Corsica. Until 6 weeks ago when I started training I had never ridden a road bike and it’s safe to say sea kayaking isn’t exactly in my comfort zone either![/p][p]There is no doubt the challenge will be tough physically, mentally and technically but that’s not why I am asking for your support. The reason for our strive is to raise money for Big Change the charity which funds projects to give children and young people the opportunity to develop the skills they need to thrive in life not just exams. [/p][p]Many children miss out on important life skills, simply down to circumstance. By the time a child from a low income family leaves school they would have heard thirty million fewer words than if they were from a high income family. Postcode still remains the most powerful predictor of educational outcomes in the west and the UK ranks as having one of the lowest levels of social mobility in the world. As someone who grew up in a council house just outside of Glasgow I want to see as many young people as possible have the opportunity to realise their full potential and thrive in life.[/p][p]Through the Strive Challenge we support and achieve things together we never thought possible and it is a privilege to have such an experience. The realisation you are capable of things you never thought you could do provides growth fuel for life and that’s what young people need. [/p][p]So I am not asking you to support me because of the tough physical challenge but because supporting incredible organisations that give young people a leg up; equipping them with beliefs, skills and knowledge they need to thrive in life, in turn becoming role models to those around them, is such an important Big Change mission![/p][p]Thank you so much in advance for your lovely kind support. Now where are my water wings….[/p][p]Linda xx[/p]
