My story

[p]As many of you know, my lovely friend Emily ended her life on 16th October 2006, aged just 22. The last few years, I have remembered her by going down to Exeter where we grew up to run the Great West Run which coincides with this anniversary. In 2020, the event is cancelled and I am not able to travel to Exeter. [/p][p]However, all is not lost. On 17th October, I will be running The Great West [of Kidlington] Run, a half marathon starting from our house which is conveniently located in West Kidlington. This is going to be surprisingly tough as I haven't run further than 15k in 12 months and I am currently taking 6 different sorts of medication which seems to be somewhat impeding my running abilities. However, the longer it takes, the more time I will have to remember Emily. Please donate if you would like to remember Emily too; Mind was one of the charities chosen by her Mum for funeral donations and this is why I have raised money for them over the years.[/p][p]In addition, I am taking on the Frosty 10 Challenge over the next few months. This involves swimming a minimum of 50m, 10 times, outside without a wetsuit. I know 50m must seem like a very short distance for someone who has swum much bigger distances but they have always been in warmer water, clad in a wetsuit. The river is already less than 10C so this is actually a weirdly big challenge for me. I detest being cold but there is some evidence that immersion in cold water is good for depression so I am interested to test it out....and I think it's worthy of some sponsorship.[/p][p]Who are Mind?[/p][p]We're Mind, the mental health charity. We believe no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We're here for you. Today. Now. Whether you're stressed, depressed or in crisis. We'll listen, give support and advice, and fight your corner.[/p][p]We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.[/p][p]Watch this short video to find out more?[/p][p]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPxHTZRwXX8[/p][p]I'm raising funds to support the important work Mind does and to allow them to continue to be there for everyone who needs them. Please donate if you can.[/p][p]This is what your donation could do:[/p][p]£10 could allow us to send essential information booklets about mental health to 40 people.[/p][p]£40 could pay for 28 people to campaign for change on our behalf.[/p][p]£70 could keep our online community, Elefriends, open and safe for two hours. [/p][p]£120 could offer a lifeline to eight people in desperate need of support from our Mind legal line.[/p][p]£200 could help us keep the Mind Infoline open for 1 hour, helping 35 people.[/p][p]£300 could support a young person bereaved by suicide to access 1:1 and group support. [/p][p]£550 could provide five people struggling with their mental health a place in a 10-week wellbeing group with team sports and cookery.[/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to visit my page and for donating. Your support is hugely appreciated.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Mind. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p]

You can do it! You are amazing and I salute your commitment to fundraising and to getting cold and running a long way, though not both at the same time.

As ever, a heartfelt memorial to a dear friend. I'm intrigued as to whether you will find the cold water helpful - you are far braver than I in trying it out!
