My story

*edit 28/05/2011* After 3 hours and 32 minutes (not to mention 13 seconds) of lying face down in Dorney Lake, I crawled over the finish line saying "oh my goodness, I just swam 10k". I survived the cold, the monotony and the hard work, thanks to lots of motivation from everyone who had sponsored me, lots of nutella and flapjack the night before and gummy bears en route, and mainly due to being able to watch Ken trudging the 10km on the edge in a florescent jacket so that I could see him. I am still smiling from managing to achieve something that I didn't believe I could do until I got to the end, and from having already raised lots of money for two great causes. I hope that I will be able to raise even more money from the people who were waiting to see if I finished or not to take me to £2k...

2011 is a very exciting year as Ken and I are getting married on August 2nd. However, I wanted to do something else to mark this year, and raise money for two fantastic charities: Mind, the Mental Health Charity, and Macmillan, Cancer Support, to remember three people important to us who are no longer around - my school friend Emily, who took her life in 2006, and Ken's stepfather Don, and father Leslie, both of whom were lost to cancer in the last year.

Having been encouraged to "up the stakes" if I did another swim, I will be renewing my acquaintance with Dorney Lake, and will be attempting to swim round it twice. Dorney Lake is the Olympic Rowing Venue, and is thus quite long (2.5km) - so the swim will total 10km, which is the Olympic Distance for Open Water Swimming, and generally viewed as the swimmer's equivalent to the marathon. That's 6.2 MILES or 400 lengths of a 25m pool. I imagine - although I am doing my best not to think about it - that it will be quite cold. I have been training since Christmas and will be doing my best to complete it: you can spur me on by sponsoring me!

This will be the third year running that I have supported Mind in memory of Emily, and I am hoping to add considerably to the £3100 that I have raised over the last two years. I want to continue to assist Mind in raising awareness and promoting understanding about mental health issues, so that those people who are experiencing mental distress can continue to be supported, at a time when mental health is still surrounded by misunderstanding and fear.

Macmillan did a fantastic job of supporting Ken's family during the last year of Don's life, and were equally caring in the last month's of Les's life. Ken will also be raising money for them separately this year, by cycling in the Etalpe Du Tour (a 120 mile bike ride, mostly uphill...), so please consider sponsoring him as well if you can (www.virginmoneygiving.com/kenwestgate)

I am hoping that by swimming more than twice as far I will be able to raise more than twice as much money...please support me as generously as you can!
