My story

[p]I am proud to have been nominated to carry the Olympic Torch on 9th July in recognition of the fundraising that I have carried out for Mind over the last 3 years.  I have been motivated by the loss of my dear friend Emily after a long battle with depression in 2006.[/p][p]In 2012, I am going to undertake not one challenge but several and intend to swim over 50km in openwater swimming events and to run over 50km in running/combined events.  This will include my first aquathlon (750m swim, 5km run), my first triathlon (750m swim and 5km run with a cycle and several changes of clothes in between), my longest ever swim to date (14km) and if all goes to plan with conclude with my first ever marathon in October.  I am new to running in the last year and have had various setbacks so may have to find some 10km races to make up the distance![/p][p]Why support Mind?[/p][p]Each week:[/p][p]"[/p][ul] [li] 104 people in the UK will take their own lives.[/li] [li] 2,038 adults will be admitted to a mental health hospital in England, resulting in about 5 million bed days per year.[/li] [li] There will be 912 detentions under the Mental Health Act 1983. 385 of these will be voluntary admissions"[/li] [/ul][p]Mind work to support those with mental health issues by providing a heavily used info-line, lobbying the government to make changes to the way that those with mental health are treated, raising awareness of mental health difficulties throughout the country, and supporting local Mind associations to provide valued drop in centres, counselling and supported housing.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
