My story

[p]Our people at Virgin Active selected Sparks as our partner charity for 2011 and 2012. During this time we have raised over £248,000 through fundraising in our clubs and offices. [/p][p]Over the 2 years, Virgin Active have managed to fully fund the research project into congenital heart defects (CHD) in newborn babies. Currently one in every 120 babies in the UK is born with CHD. Some require surgery straight after delivery; others require ongoing treatment and medication throughout their childhood – which make it difficult to live a healthy, active lifestyle.[/p][p]Our partnership with Sparks has now been extended and all funds will now support research into running bikes for children cerebral palsy.[/p][p]Cerebral palsy is a term that refers to a set of neurological conditions that affect a child’s movement and co-ordination. It is caused by damage to the brain, which usually occurs before birth, but can happen during or soon after birth.[/p][p]Around 1 in 400 children are affected in the UK with around 1,800 new cases each year. This project aims to help improve the quality of life of children with severe cerebral palsy. [/p][p]This innovative ground breaking project aims to introduce supported running bikes to very severely disabled children with cerebral palsy in order to determine if the specially adapted bikes are a feasible and enjoyable form of weight-bearing exercise for those children with the severest disability and who would normally be unable to move independently.[/p][p]At Virgin Active, we love putting our fundraising support behind causes that improve the lives of young people in the UK. Now that we’re working with Sparks, we have the chance to make a real difference to future generations.[/p]
