My story

[p]Step by step...[/p][p]On Sept 13th 2021 I am going to follow the Round Norfolk Relay route on foot starting in Great Yarmouth, then walking clockwise round Norfolk back to Great Yarmouth before making the walk back to the Samaritans office in Norwich. That’s 198 miles round the border and then an extra 22 miles back to the centre, making it a 220 mile walk in 7 days that’s an average of 31.5 miles a day. If that’s not tricky enough I will be carrying my tent and key provisions and will be sleeping out each night. For anyone who knows me, I'm not the fittest and do like my comforts so believe that this will take me well out side my comfort zone.[/p][p]For me personally this will be gruelling challenge, but I hope to raise awareness of the amazing work that Samaritans do. Samaritans vision is simple and powerful, and one I can directly relate to.[/p][p]Our vision is that fewer people die by suicide.[/p][p]Why am I doing this I hear you ask?[/p][p]I owe my life to the service that Samaritans provide and see this as a great opportunity to make more people aware of the fantastic work that Samaritans do. I also hope that through this walk I can be the catalyst for others to share and talk about their own mental health. I've. been scarily close to the edge and have lost good friends to suicide and want to do everything in my power to make sure that no-one has to feel alone with their thoughts. Samaritans are they 24/7 365 days a year to listen in confidence and without judgement. Also throughout my 20 + year battle with my mental health walking has often been the best medicine. Sometimes simply putting one foot in front of the other helps me get through the darkest of times.[/p][p]If you can donate please do. This is what donations to The Samaritans can pay for[/p][p]£5 will allow us to respond to someone struggling to cope.[/p][p]It takes £46 to train and support an existing volunteer for a year.[/p][p]£189 will pay for a day of providing emotional health classes in schools.[/p][p]£200 can pay for Samaritans to recruit, train and support a new volunteer to give them the skills they need.[/p][p]£334 will pay for one Samaritans branch to remain open for a day.[/p][p]Your donation will change people's lives...[/p][p]thank you.[/p][p][br][/p]

Wow Ben! Two successful journeys rolled into one, congratulations. I had no knowledge about either of them; having lost touch with business contacts since I fully retired. You are evidently still the lovely guy I remember from the past. Well done mate.
