My story

[p]Hi! Thanks for popping along to my fundraising page. You can read below the long version of why, once again, I'm running the London Marathon for Alzheimer's Research UK. The short version is this: Alzheimer's robbed my nan of the last decade of her life. The impact of this cruel disease profoundly affected those closest to her, especially my grandad and mum. Right now, there is no cure or treatment which can stop or even slow it down, so raising money to fund research into Alzheimer's is absolutely vital. Whether you want to support this cause or just enjoy seeing a grown man suffer by running 26.2 miles in one go, please dig deep and give what you can. Thank you so much![/p][p]Cheers[/p][p]Will[/p][p][/p][p]*************************************************************************************************************************[/p][p]This is Maud. Devoted and beloved grandma, mother, wife and scouser. Maudie left us on 18th October 2007 after losing the last decade of her life to the torment and ravaging effects of Alzheimer's. It started with the small things, as it often does - forgetting how to work the washing machine, telling tall tales about things she thought she had watched on TV - before gradually progressing though to the panicked phone calls when she couldn't find Grandad (who was at the shops) - and finally, after moving in to a care home, to forgetting some of those closest to her (I became 'Peter' and we'd worked together at the Jacob's cracker factory when she'd worked after the war - she'd even introduced me to my wife apparently!). Thankfully, as destructive and heart-breaking as the disease can be, it never robbed her of her Maud-ness. Her sharp wit never wained, her sense of mischief never dimmed, and even in her final days, when curled up in bed and flitting in and out of consciousness, she turned down a drink of water in favour of a wee dram of whisky. She was, and will always be, our Maud. Nan, Mum, Maudie Pie, best friend to Grandad and my inspiration for once again running 26.2 miles through the streets of London to raise money for Alzheimer's Research.[/p][p]You see, Grandma's story isn't unique. It's not even uncommon. In fact, right now in Britain, almost 1,000,000 people are living with a form of dementia, the most common one being Alzheimer’s disease, and 1 in 3 of us will be affected by the disease in some way. [/p][p]And here's the rub. [/p][p]There is no treatment. [/p][p]There is no cure. [/p][p]There is nothing currently available to slow it down or prevent it from taking hold.[/p][p]Not yet.[/p][p]Research can and will end dementia, and that's why I'm running through wind, rain, aches and pain to take part in the Virgin London Marathon 2020 to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Alzheimer's Research UK are the UK's leading dementia research charity dedicated to diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. [/p][p]Every penny in donations, encouragement, likes and shares on social media and support will help me achieve my fundraising target of £2000. So please donate what you can, share far and wide and spread the word. I really appreciate all your support and thank you so much for any donations.[/p][p]Cheers,[/p][p]Will[/p][p]PS Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p]
