My story

[p]In July 2014, one of my campers was undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia. When I heard he had been bullied at school for losing his hair, I was devastated. I was so proud of him for having the strength to keep going to school despite the treatment and to have his confidence knocked by his own peers was very hard for him and his family. I haven't cut my hair since that summer. Many said I wouldn’t tough it out but the time has finally come. In July 2016, 100 weeks after that incident, I will be cutting off all 30cm (12inches) of my hair and donating it to Zichron Menachem to be made into a wig for a young girl suffering from cancer. Two years of abuse, mockery, embarrassment and a truckload of conditioner later, it is with great pleasure and humility that I am able to give my hair to someone who needs it more than I do. These kids are made of really tough stuff and although the hair loss is medically only a small part of the condition, being able to give a girl the strength to look in the mirror and see a small fraction of her former self plays a big role in continuing the fight to overcome.[/p] [p]In anticipation of the big snip, I have teamed up with the Wilf Children’s Hospital at Shaare Zedek. Shaare Zedek is a world-class medical facility in Jerusalem that operates a specialist centre of excellence in paediatric dialysis. Children with end-stage renal disease require 2½ - 4 hour dialysis sessions up to five times a week – the ward becomes their second home, sometimes for many months or years. The dialysis machine acts as an artificial kidney to clear harmful substances from the blood. Dialysis is a lifesaving machine. Each session is saving the life of the child hooked up to it. The centre can perform dialysis on 25 children each day but it is full to capacity. That means children are being turned away from treatment because there aren’t enough machines. Shaare Zedek desperately needs another dialysis machine to cope with the growing number of children who come from all over the country for treatment. The full cost of the machine is £18,000.[/p] [p]Donating hair can give the inner strength to continue the fight but it has to be coupled with medical excellence. Please join with me in giving the gift of life to so many children in desperate need; an extra paediatric dialysis machine will save the lives of several children [span=text-decoration: underline;]each and every day[/span].[/p][p][/p][p]Any donation - large or small - will be gratefully appreciated! With lots of love, gratitude and appreciation for your support.[/p][p][/p] [p]Zak Kanter xxx[/p] [p][/p][p]Shaare Zedek UK is a registered charity no. 1143272.
