[p]Some children dream about what they’d like to be when they grow up. Others dream about meeting their favourite characters. [/p][p]One big sister, four year old Amelia-Rose, has just one dream, however. [/p][p]Amelia-Rose Walton, from Cheltenham, longs to be able to walk unaided, so she can walk her little sister Chloe the short distance to her first day at school. To proudly take Chloe through the school gates and into the next big stage of her life.[/p][p]It’s not an impossible dream.[/p][p]Amelia-Rose has been diagnosed with Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) - a degenerative disease that means her limited use of her legs will only get more painful, and mean she is more likely to be consigned to a wheelchair for life. [/p][p]It is incredibly rare for this inherited disorder to be diagnosed in somebody so young.[/p][p]A life-changing operation in the US would mark the beginning of the realisation of Amelia-Rose’s hopes, and, if able to go ahead, would give her the time she needs to build her strength in time for Chloe to start school in September 2020.[/p][p]Mum Tanya and Dad Ben have been fundraising for Amelia-Rose for more than two years, desperately trying to raise enough for the operation, scheduled to go ahead at St. Louis Children’s Hospital on the 29th of August 2019.[/p][p]They’ve done an incredible job, raising more than £26,000, in fact, courtesy of some incredibly kind donations.[/p][p]The operation, sadly not available on the NHS, costs £36,000. The balance needs to be paid by the 10th July for the treatment to go ahead.[/p][p]If the Waltons are able to raise the £10,000 in the 35 days between now and then - the equivalent of £285 each day - Amelia-Rose has every chance of realising her ambition. [/p][p]It’s just the start of a long road ahead - with more fundraising for vital yet expensive aftercare necessary in the near-future, but for now, the operation and Amelia-Rose’s first step towards her first unaided steps is all the family are thinking about.[/p][p]If the surgery can’t go ahead on the proposed date of August 29th, it will have to be rescheduled for a much later date. Given the nature of the condition, every month that passes means continued degeneration and pain. Her chance of recovery lessens.[/p][p]Dad Ben - who is quick to highlight just how ‘unfit’ he is! - is willing to put his body on the line to draw attention to the effort to realise Amelia-Rose’s dream - putting himself through three challenges of a lifetime to give his daughter the chance to walk. [/p][p]He will be attempting 3 challenges, across 3 months, covering 300 kilometers, in May, June and July.[/p][p]Ben has already walked from London to Brighton in May, covering 100km.[/p][p]He will be attempting to walk another 100km continuously over 2 days when he tackles the Cotswold Way Challenge in June, before attempting a similar challenge less than a month later - a 100km walk known as the Chiltern Challenge.[/p][p]Supporting the challenges is real-life superhero Jamie McDonald from neighbouring Gloucester, who, dressed as alter-ego Adventureman, recently broke the Guinness world record for the greatest distance covered on a treadmill in 7 days, just weeks after finishing his 210 marathon, 5,500 mile run across the US. [/p][p]McDonald, 32, is supporting through his charity Superhero Foundation, by both providing advice and enabling the Waltons to claim Gift Aid on all donations. [/p][p]Jamie said,[/p][p]“I met the whole family a while back and I immediately felt their warmth and amazing energy. They’re a local family, on our doorstep and the Dad is taking on a challenge that proves that he’ll do anything to improve his daughter’s quality of life and reduce the pain she finds herself in daily, for now and the future. If you watch the video of her, I think there’s a Superhero in the making.”[/p][p]Ben said,[/p][p]“Amelia-Rose smiles through her daily pain and struggles, but for Tanya and I, it’s not just a case of managing that. We want to give her a life that is, cruelly, just out of our grasp right now.[/p][p]“I am not especially fit. In fact, I, like many, probably take my ability to move healthily for granted. But, seeing her passion for life, and hearing her at just four years old talk so lovingly about wanting to be there for her little sister on her first day of school - well, it is impossible to feel anything other than a desperation to improve things for her. These challenges will push me so far out of my comfort zone, but as any parent will understand - I’d go to the ends of the earth for my children. I’m making a start with these 300 kilometers.”[/p]
