Story

[p]In 2011, around 9,400 people were diagnosed with brain, other Central Nervous System or intracranial tumours in the UK.&nbspThats 26 people every day.&nbsp[/p][p]Our friend Steve Lloyd&nbsphas been diagnosed with a brain tumour which has been progressively growing, forcing him to take early retirement at only 40 years old in order to undergo further long-term therapy.&nbsp[/p][p]Steve has worked for our company London Underground&nbspfor the whole of his career, from apprentice, working at different fleet locations and through to becoming a key manager in our District Line Fleet maintenance depots. Through twenty-two years of service to the company and the travelling public, Steve has contributed so much to the Underground and London and is a well-loved character who left a positive impression on all those that have worked with him.[/p][p]Inspired by Steves story, and the loss of another dear friend to a brain tumour, Louise Hudson in 2010, we have organised a fund-raising team of colleagues to ride the length of the District line for support in our bid to raise money and awareness for the Brain Tumour Research fund through our charity bike ride.[/p][p]Our challenge[/p][p]Our challenge, as a team, is to cycle the whole&nbsplength of the District line on&nbsp&nbspSunday 23 August.&nbsp[/p][p]&middot&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspWe will have five teams of five riders.&nbsp&nbsp[/p][p]&middot&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspEach team will start at a different terminus on the District line Ealing Broadway, Wimbledon, Richmond, Edgware Road & Upminster.[/p][p]&middot&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspTeams will all cycle at the same time towards a mid-point at Tower Hill where all teams will join together with all volunteers who have supported during the day to celebrate the event.&nbsp[/p][p]&middot&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspAll riders will use TfL Santander Cycles, which are being supplied for us for this event free of charge&nbspby Serco a big thank you to them and all&nbspour colleagues within TFL for their support.[/p][p]We will take in all stations along the route, as well as some local landmarks like Stamford&nbspBridge home to Chelsea FC,&nbspand the Boleyn Ground,&nbsphome of Steves beloved West Ham United.&nbsp&nbspWe are working with our colleagues in the District and Circle & Hammersmith lines stations teams to ensure their support for this event.&nbsp[/p][p]We will also have volunteers collecting at&nbspkey District line stations&nbspthe week before so if you would like to be involved in this&nbspand help support us in our quest please contact us.[/p][p]e mail:-&nbsp&nbsp dlccc15@gmail.com[/p][p]&nbspKeep checking back on this site&nbspto see our grand total as we approach our goal of raising &pound15k and also click the "fundraisers" tab below to see how the individual&nbspriding teams are doing with their fundraising and preparations[/p][p]Thanks again for your support in helping us to make a difference.&nbspLeon, Steve, Jon&nbspand Dean&nbsp #CloserToACure[/p][p]&nbsp[/p]
