[p]Raising vital funds for life saving research into Ewing sarcoma.[/p][p]Sam's approach to life was straightforward: to appreciate the beauty in life; live each day as if it were his last and to help everyone he could along the way. He was pretty successful at this right up until his death from Ewing sarcoma on 16 May 2020, aged 23.[/p][p]Sam was a force of nature – full of joie de vivre. He was fun, loving and lovable with a very wide circle of friends. He ‘worked hard and played hard’, making the most of life.[/p][p]His boundless energy fuelled his passion for rugby, running, hiking – virtually any outdoor activity where he could be close to nature– and he loved to travel. He was an MUFC supporter and a big music fan with an eclectic taste who spent many happy hours going to festivals, concerts and clubs or just listening anywhere.[/p][p]When Sam was eventually diagnosed with Ewing's in July 2018, there were already tumours throughout his body but Sam never shied away from the challenge facing him. Instead he met it with determination, courage, grace and, more often than not, humour. Nor did he let his life be defined by cancer - he continued to live it in his own inimitable style.[/p][p]Fitzy's Fund - remembering Sam, remembering forgotten cancers[/p][p]The aim of the Sam Fitzsimmons Fitzy’s Fund is to raise awareness of forgotten cancers – such as sarcomas and bone cancer - which are overlooked, underfunded and under-researched. [/p][p]Sam’s hope was that greater awareness, more funding and more research would bring about earlier diagnosis, kinder treatments and better outcomes for future generations. Our hope is that together, through Fitzy’s Fund, we can fulfil Sam’s hope for him. [/p][p]Money raised will support much needed research into Ewing Sarcoma, an aggressive bone and soft tissue cancer, where current treatments are limited and harsh - often involving life-altering surgery - and survival rates have not significantly improved over the last 30 years.[/p][p]For those like Sam who are diagnosed only after their disease has spread, survival rates plummet to a dismal c25%: [/p][p]So please help all the other ‘Sams’ out there by spreading the word, particularly among GPs and other health professionals. Early diagnosis really can be the difference between life or death. [/p][p]Your contribution, no matter what it is, will be greatly valued. It will have meaning and it will make a difference.[/p][p]If you would like to link your own personal fundraising event or challenge in order to support Fitzy’s Fund/BCRT, please just follow the link at the bottom of the page entitled 'Link your personal fundraising challenge’. BCRT can provide some support for fundraising – in the form of ideas or ‘Fitzy’s Fund’ wristbands, collecting tins etc. [/p][p]If you’d like to learn more about Sam, have a listen to his podcast: [/p][p]Or read the St John's College tribute to him: [/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
