[p]At 7.10 am on Wednesday the 18th April 2007 my 16 year old son, Graham, died. He was on a morning run before school to get in shape to climb Kilimanjaro. We were going to climb it as a “father and son kind of a thing”. A few months previously we had watched together Al Gore’s video An Inconvienient Truth and I was wanting him to bear witness to there being a glacier on its summit, and that within his life time the glacier would disappear. That was over 10 years ago.[/p][p]I had attempted to climb Kilimanjaro in 1981 after working in Malawi on a VSO placement and I made it to Gilman's Point (5685 m) which is on the crater rim. I had intended to climb Kilimanjaro on what would have been his 26th birthday and make it to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895 m). However, in December 2016 I had a heart attack and my trip had to be postponed. I undertook the trek between 11 - 21 October 2018 and made the summit on the morning of 18 October 2018. I hope to raise some money for charities, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) so please help. I am covering the cost of my trip so all donations will go to the charities... The donation page will remain open until Graham's birthday 20 March 2019.[/p][p]For further details of the story and the vicissitudes of my journey you can follow my blog on:[/p][p]www.keithdavieskiliblog.wordpress.com[/p][p]The photograph is of Graham added to a photograph I took in 1981 when I first attempted to climb the mountain.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
