[p]On the 28th January 2020, our world was shattered by the loss of our Mum, who took her own life due to the inability to come to terms with the loss of our Dad in September 2019. She had battled with poor mental health almost the full duration that Dad had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in summer of 2018. Her love for Dad and her loss was so strong she simply could not cope without him. Despite having some very difficult conversations on a number of occasions, ending up in hospital and visiting a range of mental health professionals, Mum did not let anyone in to her true feelings. Mum was an incredibly positive, humble and precious person who took such great enjoyment from helping others, right throughout her life. She is so deeply missed by us and everyone who had the honour in coming into contact with her.[/p][p]Since Mum’s passing, we have processed our loss in many ways including counselling, adopting a range of self-care methods and I have also been attending group sessions with Survivors of Bereaved by Suicide (SOBS). The monthly group is primarily Edinburgh-based and despite it being online due to the pandemic, it has been so helpful in being able to share and process emotions & experiences with people who have been through it all themselves. [/p][p]Although not every suicide is preventable, unfortunately, there is far too many people who feel this is the only way out of whatever they are going through. In Scotland alone there was 833 registered deaths by suicide in 2019, affecting thousands of family members and friends in the process. [/p][p]Charities such as Back Onside, who provide critical prevention support, are so important in helping people de-escalate their suicidal tendencies and work through their challenges. SOBS also provide critical prevention support as those who have experienced losing someone to suicide are at higher risk of having suicidal tendencies themselves. The pandemic has only made charities such as this even more important.[/p][p]To raise money & awareness of these two incredible charities, I am aiming to run 10k every day for 28 days from 1st January to 28th January 2021. Running has been a huge part of my own self-care and resilience, helping me to stay positive, process thoughts and emotions and stay healthy. Running through these 28 days will allow us to reflect on Mum's strength and pain during this period without Dad and allow for a positive distraction during a difficult period.[/p][p]I will be running with some family and friends throughout the challenge and will be sharing all my progress, along with some information on the charities I am raising some money for via my Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/chris_sellar7[/p][p]See link to a video I put together to raise awareness of this campaign here - https://www.instagram.com/tv/CJlT5ZRghQv[/p][p]I would have loved to have had a get together to run the final leg on 28th Jan but I don’t think that will be possible due to Covid so I am encouraging everyone to run, walk, or cycle 10k between Thursday 28th Jan and Sunday 31st Jan at your own time and location. Please share a photo with me on WhatsApp, Instagram etc. using #RunForHilz if you are able to join in! [/p][p]Any support would be amazing![/p]
