[p]You may already know that two years ago my grandson Josh was admitted to hospital with an asthma attack which turned out to be due to a large lymphoma in his chest. It was devastating news for Josh, his parents and the family. He was only four years old. Since then he has had daily intensive chemotherapy with a cocktail of nine different drugs by mouth, into muscles, veins and even into his spinal cord. He has been admitted with life-threatening infections and suffered muscle weakness in his legs, sometimes requiring a wheelchair, and yet still has 18 months treatment to go.[/p][p]Cancer is cruel, but especially unfair in children. Thirty years ago, by a sad coincidence, my nephew had exactly the same treatment for leukaemia when he, too, was four and survived. Although childhood cancer survival rates have improved, in all that time no new treatment has been developed for children and nothing to reduce the terrible side-effects they suffer. [/p][p]Earlier this year Josh's dad ran the London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK. Now it's my turn and I shall be running the New York Marathon on 3rd November in aid of Children with Cancer. I would really welcome your sponsorship. My training has included the Great North Run, the Plymouth 10K, the recent Great West Run as well as several other runs. All proceeds go to the charity. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Children with Cancer UK. Please be as generous as you can.[/p][p]Children with Cancer UK is the biggest funder of research into childhood cancers and also supports the families of the children. They fund over 60 research projects across the UK to help improve childhood cancer survival rates and find kinder, more effective treatments to reduce long-term side effects. This ground breaking research saves children's lives. Children with Cancer also helps fund patient family accommodation near hospitals so families can stay together during their children's treatment. They also organise unforgettable days out for children and their families to create memories that will never be lost whatever happens.[/p][p]Every child with cancer who completes treatment rings an end of treatment bell. With your support, CwC is helping to create a future in which every child with cancer experiences that wonderful moment when they ring the end of treatment bell. A single child dying from cancer is one too many.[/p][p]Thank you, in advance, for sponsoring me and helping to save the lives of children with cancer and keep families together. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
