[p][img][/img]Dear Family and Friends[/p][p]Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. [/p][p]I have chosen to raise money for the Lee Spark NF (Necrotising Fasciitis) Foundation. [/p][p]http://nfsuk.org.uk/[/p][p]The charity was established in January 2000 by Doreen Marsden following the sudden loss of her son, Lee, to this dreadful disease in the previous year. Doreen realised the need to give support to those people forced to deal with NF both personally and professionally, and The Lee Spark NF Foundation remains the United Kingdom’s only support group for people affected.[/p][p]Necrotising Fasciitis is a horrifying disease where a serious bacterial infection kills the soft tissue beneath the skin. Necrotising fasciitis can progress very quickly and lead to serious problems such as blood poisoning (sepsis) and organ failure. Even with treatment, it's estimated that 1 or 2 in every 5 cases are fatal.[/p][p]My stepson, Josiah, contracted this disease when he was 10 years old. A perfectly healthy boy, and to this day we have no idea how he contracted the infection. Can you imagine a 10 year old boy coming home on Friday afternoon having played rugby at school and full of beans for the coming weekend, complaining of an aching ankle and a headache on the Saturday, and by Sunday night lying in intensive care on life-support having undergone the first of the 13 operations that he would need over the next 5 weeks. Such is the speed at which NF moves and its devastating impact.[/p][p]Josiah was the luckiest of unlucky little boys. Thankfully he was in the right place at the right time - Kings College Hospital and the Evelina Children’s Hospital at St Thomas’s in London provided amazing medical care and saved his life. Fortunately, he has made a full recovery, with scars to invent stories about, and is doing everything as an 18 year-old that we ever hoped for.[/p][p]This is an illness that can happen to anyone at any time. [/p][p]The mission of The Lee Spark Necrotising Fasciitis (NF) Foundation is to help those whose lives have been affected by necrotising fasciitis and other severe streptococcal infections and medical staff who are involved with investigating, diagnosing and treating NF.[/p][p]It aims to help the medical profession gain a better understanding of how NF develops, how it can be identified early, and how it can be treated. The Foundation has been selected to be part of a five-year EU programme working with seven countries on a project called INFECT, which aims to contribute to the understanding of highly lethal destructive tissue infections. NF is not a new disease – it was first recorded in medical journals in the 16th century![/p][p]The Foundation needs help to raise its profile and carry out its work.[/p][p]Please sponsor me. This is the first time I have attempted to run a marathon, and will be my last also! I am only running because I have managed to get a place raising money for this particular cause as I need something close to my heart to get me through it. [/p][p]Claire[/p]
